Failure to upload GPX files

When I try yo upload a gpx file to my Garmin touring there is always an error message saying failed to sync. Is this because there is an error in the file or do I have to convert the gpx into another format? I'm using a Mac and not windows. I can see the file in Garmin Connect but can't sync and view file on the Touring.
