920xt recorded time of open water swim, but didn't track the distance

Hi there,

Just started using my 920 and went for an ocean swim yesterday.

I hit start at the beginning and the timer counted the entire swim. However, no data was recorded for distance. I finished the swim and it just said 0m.

After the swim I recorded a 100m walk to see if that would be tracked, and it was.

Is there any way to retrieve the swim data at all? Or is it lost forever?

Is there a setting I may have missed?

Thanks,
Dan.
  • Obvious question, was GPS on for the Open Water swim profile?
  • Similarly have you got any sort of GPS track - even just the start/end point?

I presume you were doing a stroke where the 920 actually exited the water?

I ask because when I tried breaststroke, I largely got no track - think because the watch was pretty much constantly under the water line.
  • Thanks for getting back to me.

I thought I had everything set correctly... but is there a setting to turn on GPS for the Open Water swim profile? It definitely connected with the satellites and had full bars when I started the swim.

It recorded my strokes, but just not the distance.

Here are the stats that were recorded:

  • No GPS track at all for the swim. But it tracked my walk afterwards.

Yep, I was doing freestyle for the swim, and it tracked all my strokes.

No tracking for open water swim

My 920 did exactly the same. Time & stroke rate worked but no distance recorded.
It's the first time I've used it in open water, it works fine in the pool.
I was doing front crawl & did about 2500m
Also I had the watch under my wetsuit, would that make a difference ie block the GPS
    Any info would be great

I just experienced a similar thing in my OWS.
It recorded the first 100ish meters after which I paused to wait for someone to also get in.
After resuming the watch didn't record any more distance, but when looking at the activity there is a line on the map of where I went.
The person I was with also used a 920xt and had no problems at all, also I used the day before for an OWS with no problems.
If there is a line on a map, surely the GPS points exist. Does anyone know of a way for the GPS points to be read so I can get an accurate distance?
    Thanks,
    Josh

    Same issue

Im having same issue with open water swimming.

GPS is "ON" but no distance recording. I will do another test in the week, maybe i need to wait for the GPS to find satelliates.

This is my second 920XT, the first one did not recorded distance in swimming too, and for running the distance recorded wasnt accurate, so I decided to return it and buy another one.

Hope its not an issue with the watch HW.
  • You always need to wait for GPS to acquire satellites no matter what activity you do. Even more important for an OW swim as the satellite tracking is very intermittent at best and calculates your actual track using some magical algorithm that estimates where you've been from the sketchy contacts made during the brief split seconds when your arm is out of the water between strokes.
Assuming of course you are swimming freestyle. If you are doing breaststroke, you will not get any satellite tracking as your arm will always be submerged and the 920 unable to get any satellite fix.

For best results apparently, put the 920 under your swim cap.

It works. Here is a track from this morning - https://www.strava.com/activities/818069345
  • I had same problem today . Last two swims just time no distance
