Problems with Garmin Connect (or perhaps I do not understand how it works)

Hi All

I have recently decided to use Garmin Connect via my web browser (Google Chrome Version 39.0.2171.71 m, current as of 26 Nov 2014). To date I have been using the very old and now unsupported Garmin Training Center software. I installed Garmin Express (Version 3.2.21.0) and connected my Garmin Edge 500 (Software Version 3.30) to that. It synced to my Garmin Connect account and the activities showed up.

I have some problems, or maybe it's a case of me not understanding how to use Garmin Connect correctly.

1) (and this may be a Garmin Express problem) Every time I start Garmin Express up, or look in Garmin Connect under Device Sync I see one software update waiting to install (Time Zone Map, Version 15.00). I have installed it (allegedly) numerous times both through Garmin Express and through Garmin Connect and it still appears the next time I plug the Garmin Edge 500 in. Any thoughts on this? I have removed and re-added the Garmin Edge 500 to Garmin Express, and also un-installed and re-installed Garmin Express with no improvement.

2) I created a course from one of my rides and sent it to the Garmin Edge 500 with no problem. I then edited the course and set the time taken to my new personal best time and loaded it back to the Garmin Edge 500. When I look at the course information (using the old Garmin Training Center software) I still see the original time, not my new edited time (this is after having deleted the Cource from Training Center and re-loading it from the Garmin Edge, so I'm not seeing old information). How do I get the updated information into the Garmin Edge? I have tried deleting the course from the Garmin Edge. It is as though Garmin Connect is not recomputing the information with the new time and loading those data points back to the Garmin Edge.

3) I have a ride with a PB in elevation gain of 991 metres. When I told Garmin Connect that ride was my PB for elevation gain it filled in 752 metres, and not 991 metres. Any idea why this would be? Suspiciously, 752 metres is the maximum elevation of the ride, not the elevation gain.

These are a few of the problems/annoyances at this time. I'd like to see if I can get them solved before trying to fix other problems. If I cannot get these sorted out I'll probably give up with Garmin Connect and go back to my old method of Garmin Training Center + Excel spreadsheet :-( It's simple but it works.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice/directions.

  • Let me Comment on Item 1 myself

I found the Garmin Express forum and the following post: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?139722-Timezone-map-ready-to-install-forerunner-610&highlight=time+zone
Carrying out the process at the end of that forum post, with the additional step of removing and re-installing the Garmin Express software has, at this time, worked for me. Neither Garmin Express nor Garmin Connect are now offering the Time Zone update. Fingers crossed that stays.

  • Think I'll give up with Garmin Connect - it's just too buggy. No matter what I try I cannot edit the time on a course in Garmin Connect and have that new time reflected in a course on my Garmin Edge 500. I also see spurious speed spikes (>100 km/hr) popping up in the course, and on one occasion a >4000 metre climb spike. Additionally, the longer I stay connected to Garmin Connect the more memory that Google Chrome process eats up - there's a memory leak in there somewhere. Another problem is that in the segments panel if I select 'favourite segments' rank positions never seem to load, the double arrow in a circle (representing loading) only ever shows. The software clearly isn't up to it with my Garmin Edge 500 at least. Oh well, back to low tech. Maybe I'll write my own code to parse the data files.
  • And my final comment on this. I found that the old Training Center software works fine with creating and importing courses back to my Edge 500. Another example of dedicated software working much better than web-based applications. We see it so often these days with all types of software.
