Swim workouts

Hi Does anyone know if it is possible to program a swim workout on garmin connect? I know how to do it for runs and cycle workouts but it does not give an option for swim??

Thanks Warren
  • I'm interested in this too.. I have tried making a custom workout in GC, but I could not use this in my swim profile. So I would also love to hear if anybody has gotten this to work.

    Hi WARRENSMITHS,

This post is quite old, but nowadays Garmin connect supports creating swim workouts for pool swimming. It has some feature limitations though: Swims can only be configured in distance (by 25 m splits, but you can also set a custom length), there are no hear-rate or pace based additional setting, I found some bugs (rest repetition being removed on last repetition set), and it is not so reliable if you are interested in strokes or speed. It also fails when using it underwaters (when practising dolphin kicks or apnea pools) as this might be one of the spots in the current state of the art of performance analysis watches for swimming. It is useful to follow-along created workouts: you can add equipment to the sets (although just one: not pull buoy and paddles, for example), add some notes to remind you what you should do, and program rest times or fixed repetition times (so if you should go every minute, it will let you rest the remaining; or count how many "debts seconds" must be paid off). You should give it a try!

    Hi RBuchholdt,

I am unsure if you are asking how a custom pool length can be defined when making a custom workout. Now you can define a custom length, which perhaps you can use to define your prefered pool length. Today I used a workout I created and I felt that the watch was a bit inaccurate, and consistently told me I finished my last pool when there was half of it still to swim (in a 25 m pool). I guess this is because the watch overestimate my stroke length (as observed post hoc in the workout) so when I do around 18, it considers the pool was completed (although I usually need 20-22 per length).
    Did I answer your question?
