Import old activities from Sporttracks 2

Hi,

I just got a 920xt. :D Before that I used my dear old friend named 305 with Sporttracks 2.

Is there any way I can import all of my old activities into Garmin Connect?
  • I did some research. And then some more ... this how far I have come.

    Garmin Training Center

First I tried to update my a bit dated Garmin Training Center data as it seemed to me the best option. I spend a few hours adding manual entries and copying some notes over to GTC.

Then I tried to export the whole things as a tcx. Every time GTC crashed and this seems to be a known but not solved problem.

Then I tried to convert my GTC backup file (*.tcd) with the nice tool from Michael (https://sites.google.com/site/mrvogel/GPS). But somehow it lost a lot of activities while converting.

As there are no options in GTC to export small chunks of years of activities in an easy way I gave up and went to back to Sporttracks. Before that I tried a folder which I created once with the activities form one year. It exported it to tcx but then Garmin Connect would not accept such a huge file?! It did not give me any clear error message but that was my guess.

    Sporttracks 2(!)

Sporttracks supports fitlog files which can be converted with TCX Converter (http://www.tcxconverter.com/TCX_Converter/TCX_Converter.html) but I could not find a way to preserve my notes.

Sporttracks can also export multiple activities into one gpx file. I can easily select only a few and do them in chunks. Yeah. But wait. My notes are in the gpx files inside a cmt tag. But they do not appear in Garmin Connect. When I export an activity from Garmin Connect as gpx the notes are in an desc tag. So I changed the cmt tag in the gpx into desc but guess what? Garmin Connect still does not import my notes. It seems someone had a similar problem: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?74564-Manual-upload-of-gpx-files But as of now there does not seem a solution for this.

    Any ideas?

I am really frustrated right now. I spend almost a days work to get my data from an old Garmin watch (305) with the system from that time (GTC) into the system that is used now since I bought my new watch (920xt). I think there should be a really easy way to achieve that. Garmin should support this. Or am I the only way feeling that way? And why is the best way I found so far only possible via a third party software (Sporttracks)?
  • This is actually easier than you'd think. You will probably lose all of your notes, but the process will be very simple. The answer? Use tapiriik.

You can set it up to do a sync from SportTracks to Garmin Connect to get all of your old data copied over, and then you can reconfigure it to copy any new data from Garmin Connect to SportTracks.

As far as I know Tapiriik is only syncing online account. Sporttracks 2 is an offline application. Or do I miss something?
The only workaround I can think of is to use Dropbox to sync the files exported from Sporttracks 2 with Garmin Connect via Tapiriik. But I could not find out if that is actually possible. Dropbox seems to more of an backup solution. Maybe I try it out if I can find the time ...
  • I connected GC and Dropbox via Tapiriik. I did two tests.

I put a GPX with two activities in the Dropbox folder as a test. Tapiriik only imported one of the activities into GC. So I would have to export every activity from a 5 year history. No way.

I put a GPX with one activity into Dropbox and synced it with Tapiriik. The notes where not imported into GC! Which is why it is way better to use the Sporttracks export function to include multiple activities into one GPX and do a manual upload in GC.

As I sidenote I noticed that Tapiriik is not synchronising swim activities correctly as gpx. There is no actual data in the gpx files. I do not know if it works with tcx. I deleted the synced gpx and set the Dropbox settings to tcx but Tapiriik will not sync the activities anymore. I think it is because it keeps a history of synced files and does not look into the dropbox folder.

I have the same experience, really frustrating that the notes are not imported to GC even though they export fine from Sporttracks... No news from anyone else?
