Out and Back Run, But Elevation Gain Doesn't Equal Loss

On my first run with the Forerunner 10, I ran basically out and back with a half-mile loop around a building at the far end. When I uploaded it and saw the writeup on Garmin Connect, my elevation loss was 79 feet while my elevation gain was only 66 feet. Why would this be? I absolutely finished where I started, and was not 13 feet beneath where I was before. Could it be that it only counts elevation change that is at least a certain steepness? I know the first part of the turnaround loop drops down faster than the rest of the loop coming back up. I apologize if there's a better forum for this question, it seems like something lots of people would wonder about.
  • Probably most of the error is simply where it logged your position during the run. Sometimes it may have put you on the lower side of your course, or the higher side. Sometimes you might get a position log entries that miss the top or bottom of a rise and other times they get the top or bottom. Speed makes a difference too, if you are going faster down hill, then there would be less data logged on the downhill portion than the uphill.

It's definitely not unexpected for the two figures to not equal.
