Recently I hiked into the Grand Canyon (Havasupai) with a friend who was using MotionX on an I phone to record our track while was using my GPSMap 60CSx. My trip report and track stats show larger distances and elevation gain/loss than his. Looking at my track uploaded to Connect shows the problem is probably due to tracking errors. E.g., while in a narrow gorge it shows me suddenly climbing the walls to the plateau above, descending, and then doing the same thing on the other side! I expect the 60CSx lost one satellite and switched to another in a different orbit, thus introducing the error.
The MotionX track shows some such track anomalies but the distances and elevations it reports are closer to accepted values. E.g., MotionX reports 7.92 miles for the hike from Hualapai Hilltop to Supai while the 60CSx reports 9.36, and the accepted distance is 8 miles. Hiking out on the same trail the MotionX reported 7.86 vs 8.65 for the 60CSx. So, it looks like MotionX is doing a better job or removing the anomalies and giving more accurate reports. Kind of embarrassing, given that MotionX is free and I paid several hundred dollars for the 60CSx!
Is this a known issue with Garmin Connect or the 60CSx? Your thoughts or suggestions appreciated.
