Segments don't work anymore

Hi,
I've been importing my road cycling activities to Garmin Connect using GPX files that I create with a GPS tracker app on my mobile phone. Until beginning of October everything worked fine including segments. However since then there seems to be a problem and segments don't work anymore when I import a new activity. GC always says 'You did not cross any segments' although I know for a fact (from previous activities) that there are segments defined on this route. Even my own segments which I created some weeks ago don't show up when I ride the same route again and import the activity.

Moreover I cannot create segments anymore for new activities. When I click on 'Create Segment' an error message appears -> 'Sorry, this activity does not have GPS data to create a segment.' Although I do everything exactly the same way as in the past. It used to work until beginning of October and since then I get these errors.

It could be related to the new version of Garmin Connect, but switching back to classic doesn't help. (Maybe GC became more restrictive and now supports segments only for activities uploaded from a Garmin device?)

My older activities that I imported before October still get displayed correctly with all segments (mine as well as other people's). But when I ride the same route again now and import the activity to GC, it neither recognizes any segments nor can I create segments by myself.

Does anybody know what's going on? Did anything change in the way GC handles segments?

Thanks!

It seems GC doesn't even try to detect segments at present. Tentatively I changed the type of a cycling activity to 'running' which (I'd expect) should trigger a new segment search. But instantaneously the message appeared 'You did not cross any segments'.

    Conclusion: not working.

There is definitely a bug. I uploaded my GPX bike track: "did not cross any segment". I converted the same track into a FIT file with Fit File Repair Tool, and uploaded the FIT: all the 6 segments I crossed were there.

How can we raise that to Garmin for a fix?

Hard to imagine that Garmin aren't aware of the problem after more than 3 weeks. Their radio silence fosters the suspicion that there is perhaps an underlying intention. E.g. they might want to limit the (free) segments evaluation to users of their GPS devices going forward?

Anybody tracking rides with a Garmin Edge and experiencing problems with segment detection?

(I'm curious particularly as I plan(ned) to buy an Edge 1000 soon.)
  • I have so far emailed Garmin three times in the last 6 months about issues with segments. Guess what, no acknowledgement or reply. I love the Edge 1000 but they just don't care about users. just how many units they can sell.

So you have problems with segments in connection with your Edge 1000? Outch! (This gadget is #1 on my list of christmas presents for myself ;-)
What kind of issues do you have?
  • Have similar problem, Created a segment and the crossed it the next day.......4 days later still nothing.

What kind of GPS device do you use to track your rides? A Garmin?
  • I'm experiencing exactly the same things. I have one circuit I ride most evenings with 5 segments I've personally created from my own rides. I think only once in the last month has it picked up all of the segments, but more often than not it's misses 1 or 2. There is 1 that it just about always misses. The rides are on a sealed road, so I'm always riding within the limits of 1 lane width. I ride with a Edge810 (v3.24 FW) and sometimes a Fenix2 (v4.0 FW) Other than the segment issues I'm one of the lucky ones who has never experience any other of the issues mentioned on the forum here on either of my devices.

My next step is to delete the worst segment and recreate.

I have always had my Edge810 recording GPS interval set to 1 second and while riding, the worst segment is always reported and displays throughout the entire segment with no off track issues and ends as expected. I also have segments before and after this one report correctly. All this makes me think that it's more to do with GarminConnect than anything else.

2014 Create Segment bug still not fixed!?

Moreover I cannot create segments anymore for new activities. When I click on 'Create Segment' an error message appears -> 'Sorry, this activity does not have GPS data to create a segment.' Although I do everything exactly the same way as in the past. It used to work until beginning of October and since then I get these errors.

Segments I cross seem to work reliably, but I haven´t been able to create a segment once in the last 6 months. I get the message:
"Sorry, this activity does not have GPS data to create a segment."
And i get a map of Kansas (I am more than 4,000 miles away).
I have seen other threads highlighting this issue - can anyone else create segments or was this 2014 bug never fixed?
I have just bought an Edge 1000 so I am a bit disappointed if this is still an issue after 12+ months..
    Thanks!

UPDATE: managed to get it to work for the first time this morning with Edge 1000 data. May be that it only works with data generated by certain hardware? I was previously using a Garmin GPS but not an Edge series device until very recently.
