exporting map to google earth?

Hi, newbie here. Using a forerunner 910xt.
Two queries:
1. In GC classic mode, I can export a map of a run to google earth but when i try to export a map of an openwater swim, I get an error message. Why? Is this about google earth or GC?
2. I can't find a way to export a map from GC in modern view?

Thanks Joe, interesting link. I'm not having an issue with downloading from googleearth, it's just exporting a swim from GC. I don't understand why I can export a run but not a swim.
