Garmin Fenix - Issues uploading large File from 100 mile event

Hi Guys

Ive been banging my head against a brick wall whilst speaking to the Garmin support team so I'm hoping somebody here can can help.

After retiring my 310XT and taking up long distance running I recently bit the bullet and went for the Fenix2. I had a 100 mile event planned and this is the watch that Garmin advertises for such long distance events. Disappointing I later found out the 50 hour battery life was for the UltraTrac facility only with minimum data available post race, so I decided to charge the watch out on the event using a portable device so I could record the full event.

During the 100 mile event, the watch worked perfectly and still contains all 105 miles of data which took me just shy of 34 hours!

So I log onto Garmin connect with garmin express and the 5.1MB file simply does not upload, I have tried uploading the file manually through Connect, Ive tried to bluetooth it to my phone, Ive tried a macbook and Ive tried a PC.

When speaking to Garmin, they talked me through a complete diagnostics and we still failed.

I then went on to send them the FIT file, which they managed to upload - however its corrupted! Only 80 miles of the event are showing!!

I have since spoken to Garmin and they have said that the file is corrupted and 'they are sorry, it appears there is nothing that can be done...

Today, I have tried to open the file in Garmin Basecamp and the file appears perfectly, all 105 miles etc etc... So, I've tried to export the file from basecamp in the appropiate formats so I can upload from alternative file types... However I'm now getting the message Failed to export (out of memory) the list is to big!

The file includes 1100 waypoints..

In preferences Ive read I can reduce this to 500 waypoints - which I have tried to do without success!!

Sorry for this war and piece but am really at a point where a £380 Ultra running watch cannot record data and successfully upload to its designed platform?
  • If you post the original .fit file from your device, then someone will likely fix it for you.

Not sure how you saved that file from basecamp to get waypoints put in it. They should have been trackpoints.

Although many people use the fenix for a running watch, it's marketed by Garmin in their 'on-the-trail' devices not a 'fitness' or 'into sports' device.

    Hi Bipa

Thanks for the reply! Do you mean post the .fit file on here? I have just tried to do this and its appears its a little large?!
Can you please let me know how to do this?.. Ive sent the file to garmin who have simply said its corrupted..

Its obviously confused me that when loading the file in basecamp its seems to be in perfect order.. Sorry, is some details are not correct in my original post.. I presumed points were waypoints, there are also 117,112 of these not 1100. See attached

I have also just checked the garmin website and it definitely states the watch is for athletes and demanding trail runners.

Will look forward to your further replies.

    Regards
    Ian
  • There are a few other forum members here that have the fitfilerepairtool, and the frequently will fix messed up files. If they can't then they may be able to give you an idea what happened.

If the file is too large to upload here, then you might want to wait till one of them notices this thread and lets you know how to get it to them.

Have you browsed through the Garmin Fenix sub-forum to see if anyone there posted a similar issue? If you notice any threads about corrupted .fit or activity files in that forum and someone is volunteering in that thread to fix them, then that may be the better place to ask someone to look.

Thanks again for the reply. I will take a look through the fenix sub forums and see what I can find from people with the software. I did speak to Garmin again yesterday and told them of my success in getting the file successfully into basecamp. They seemed to suggest the problem was therefore with connect and maybe not a corrupted file after all...

I sent them the file again as requested but as yet I have heard nothing!

Anyway! Any help to get this file into connect is still gratefully received.

    Hello Ian,

Get yourself a free dropbox account and upload you FIT file to it and post a link to the file in another post here.
Then someone will try to repair your file so it will upload to Connect.

    Hi Don

Thank you for the note and suggestion of the dropbox link..

I have just done this here... https://www.dropbox.com/s/v4kd7f0iky1y7j7/2014-09-21-17-07-23.fit?dl=0

Good luck and will keep my fingers crossed!

    Hello Booboo,

This file has been giving the FFRT software trouble, mostly because of the large file size.

Was this supposed to be a loop? Did you return to where you started?

Do you have an estimate of how long the track should be?

    How many hours?

    Hi Don

Thanks again for the note and also spending some time looking at this file.

The file is from an 105 mile ultra run, this took me just shy of 34 hours.. Its not a loop, it started on Holy Island (England) and finished at Chollerford. The course is the full length of the St Oswald Way.

I dont understand how basecamp reads the file perfectly but its corrupt on garmin connect?!

    Hello Ian.

According to Mathias, the developer of the Fit File Repair Tool, the Fenix is including a lot of extra data in the output file like record definitions, types, fields, stuff that all the older devices do not send. This extra data is apparently causing Connect some problems sometimes. BaseCamp ignores all that fitness data and loads only time and coordinates.

Anyway, here is your file fixed and filtered down by 75% (3 out of every 4 points removed).
This file would load into my Connect account.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/gb1hdnldf1wds10/2014-09-21-17-07-23-compact.fit?dl=0

And here is the complete file fixed and un-filtered.
This file would not load into my Connect account.

    Dear Don

Thank you so much for taking the time to look at this for me! I initially tried to upload the complete file without success but I can confirm the filtered down version worked correctly.

I'm so happy that I have been able top salvage the data... This was a once only event and I don't have any aspirations to do any more 100 mile events......

Thanks also to Mathias for his input, this really is appreciated!

    All the very best
    Ian
