Problem Uploading Courses To My Garmin Edge 1000

Okay, I posted this in one of the other forums on this site, but maybe, since this is an isue at least related to Gamin Connect, I will get more help here, since I only got like one response in over a day. Anyway, I have created 6 courses on Garmin Connect. I managed to send them, one at a time, to my Edge 1000, but they keep overwriting one another and I am left with one, nd only one, course each time. I have tried everything I can think of! Sending each course like five times from the site, and that didn't work. I then made several attempts for each course from my phone, but that didn't work! In each instance, the course downloaded on my phone, and the second I clicked on send course to my device, the Garmin beeped, told me the course was downloading, and a second or two later, said download complete. Again, this is both from my phone to the Garmin and using my PC on the web!

In each instance, the course I sent would simply overwrite whatever was on there leaving me with one course.

***, I even tried using Windows Explorer. I would upload one course to the Garmin, then connect it to my PC, then opened the Garmin as a drive, navigated to the "Courses," then copied the file to a file I created on my PC's desktop. I did this SIX TIMES, so that now I have a copy of all six course files on my desktop, which I still do. Anyway, I then connected the Garmin to my PC AGAIN and proceeded to cut and paste ALL six courses into the "courses" directory of the Garmin, which looked like it worked, because all six courses were there...well, that is until I turned the Garmin on, hoping that finally all six courses would be there, but there was only ONE COURSE.

Any idea what's going on here? This has to be a problem with either the Garmin Connect, the latest firmware update, or my unit itself. I am very seriously considering boxing this thing up, along with the remote control, and the various sensors that came with the bundle pack, and sending it BACK. This is just a nightmare.
  • I Did a hard reset on my edge 500. Made no difference to course syncing problems.

Sorry man, my bad! I accidentally copied YOUR post into this thread when I meant to copy the one with the advice that according to this member works very well. Let's try this again:

I had the same problem with courses at first. Could only do a finite number and then the Garmin Connect "Send to Device" option would just replace them.

Try this, it fixed it for me:

Create a TCX or GPX file on http://ridewithgps.com, Strava or other tool, export/save the file to your computer, plug the Edge 1000 into your computer via USB, open the Edge folders, drag the newly created TCX or GPX file into the Garmin/NewFiles folder, disconnect the Edge 1000 from your PC. Check your courses once it boots up. There should be a new course added from the TCX/GPX file.

Once I did that, from that point on I could upload courses via Garmin Connect without issue.

Also, my sensors were a little finicky at first until I named them. Go to the sensor page in the menu and change the name from the sensor number to something more recognizable to you. Roubaix-Cadence, Secteur-Cadence, Roubaix-Speed, etc is what I did. Then when I switch bikes, I have to disable one bike's sensors and enable the others. Vice versa when I go back to the other bike. Once I named them and started enabling/disabling them before rides, it all works flawlessly. I still give the crank a spin with the wheel off the ground and listen for two beeps before a ride. Works like a champ now.

Tried. Makes no difference on edge 500. Still will only accept 2 courses from garmin connect.

Interesting though the ridewithgps route stays on the device and only the garmin connect routes are over written during sync.

So can still have only 2 routes on device from garmin connect.

    Thanks for suggestion.

Mine worked only partially. Instead of only having one ride from Garmin connect, after I did this, my device now allows....wait for it...four rides from my originally created rides on Garmin Connect! lol Like you, I also don't seem limited to courses with Ride With GPS, so that's a good fallback position if needed, right? (Sucks that Garmin is so bad at software and that they have delegated Edge users to being glorified beta testers, but that's another story, right?)

Okay, I found something else that works, though, but it is ANNOYING and cumbersome. Assuming you still want to use Garmin Connect. I warn you that it is really not a solution to the problem but it involves us doing Garmin's work for them **eyeroll**

Here is what works for me: Apparently when you create courses too close together in time, like I did, it seems to confuse the device, Garmin Connect, or both! What happens is that the system seems to view these courses as THE SAME COURSE, for reasons passing understanding! So with me, I was between patients at work and spent about a half hour creating six courses. So when I was home and booted up the Garmin, then uploaded them, they overwrote one another.

However, a few days later, at the behest of someone in one of the other forums on this site (another "happy" Garmin owner) I created ONE course. Again, this was a few days later. I uploaded that to my Garmin, and, voila, no overwriting. Yaaaay (sarcasm abounds here). So when I did the solution I outlined above, I had the one course that kept getting overwritten, the one course that I had created and uploaded days after the original 6 I created, the two courses from Ride With GPS, and the other two that implementing that solution forced my unit to allow. So, in short, I had 6 courses now!

Unfortunately, the two I created on Ride With GPS were just "test courses," so they aren't useful to me. But four of my original six courses is better than ONE, right? Even if I am missing two. Anyway, I then did something else: It was more than 24 hours after creating the other SINGLE course on Garmin Connect that I mentioned above. So I tried AGAIN to create just one, lone course and upload it.

    IT WORKED!

So here are two possible solutions (again, in deference to the fact that WE are doing Garmin's work for them!):

    1. Use another site to create your courses, like Ride With GPS,

    2. Create courses with more time between them. Not sure what the magic number is, but I am going to shoot for "one course a day" to create and upload. it has worked so far. It sucks, I know. I paid a small fortune for the Garmin 1000 Bundle pack + remote, and the very idea that it has such a poorly designed software package and user interface is absolutely inexcusable.

It looks like you are correct.

I had a look at the course time creation dates contained in the temporary .fit files files put in the devices newfiles folder using this http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/ . (not the file creation date).

Any way three of mine were the same and one was different. So I was only seeing two files on the device.

Deleted and recreated one course in garmin connect. So it now has a different date and I now have three courses showing on device.

From looking at the data in the file garmin connect always time stamps the course creation date with the current date of creation but the creation time appears to be always set to 02:00:00 not the the actual time of creation.

So if created on the same day and if the device is using time/date stamp to differentiate it thinks any created on same day are the same routes.

So as per your guess it looks like we are limited to creating one course a day.

    Hi

Just wanted to check whether anybody knows whether there is an update on this already ? It seems I have the same issue with Edge 1000 and even with software update 3.0.
Couldn't find more recent posts or threads.
  • Reading this 6 years after this post was made, it this seems this problem still exists on newer devices like garmin edge explore (bought in 2021). How is this even possible that Garmin hasn't fixed this? I knew Garmin's software was bad, but I have no words for this.

  • If you're referring to the "1-course" issue as the OP mentioned, that was fixed long ago. Or are you having a different issue?
