Touring Edge Plus -- what am I missingN

I live in Paris but was in the US last week and purchased a Touring Edge Plus (my first Garmin device). I bought a 16gB SD card and purchased the BeneLux and France maps via download (yesterday, in Paris). The problem I'm having is that when I turn on my Garmin and execute View Maps, all I see is a map in which Taipai is the central point…and get an infinite loop "Acquiring Satellites." I have yet to have it find my Current Location and haven't seen any maps in BeneLux or France. I'm sure I'm missing something really simple in getting things started. Any help would be appreciated (because I'm eager to start exploring).

Thanks in advance --

charlie
  • Is the device outside under a reasonably clear sky when you turn it on? Satellite reception inside is usually poor to nil. At least for the first time it tries to initialize it's position you should give it the best possible reception conditions.

Thank you!! I rode out to the Bois de Boulogne and once I got outside Paris, the Garmin started working…and continued to do so on the return trip back. So it has apparently found itself.

I have several more questions but I don't want to take advantage of your time or knowledge, so I'll only ask two (both of which you can, of course, simply ignore):

    1. There are lots of rides posted by several cycle clubs here in Paris with notes that say "Here is the route if you want to load it into your Garmin." Are there instructions as to how to do that? Does it take additional software, etc?

    2. Is there an on-line User Manual for the Touring Edge Plus (maybe I haven't looked hard enough on the Garmin site)? I'm a software developer very used to reading manuals and I sure would like to figure out how to use my device now that it knows it's in Paris.

Thanks again for your help in getting me up and running. I really appreciate it.

    Take care,

  • 1. Depends on how they created those course/track files and saved them. If on Garmin Connect, you should be able to just send them to your device. Not sure if there is a limit on how many courses you can have on your device. If from some other site or a file someone else created, then you'll have to figure out how to put it on your device. On my edge 500, I'd just copy the course/track file to my /garmin/newfiles folder.

    2. this links to the normal garmin documentation for your device. http://support.garmin.com/support/manuals/manuals.htm?partNo=010-01164-00&language=en&country=US
not anything that you shouldn't already have in paper form when you bought it. Garmin's pretty closed mouth with anything useful to a programmer though. I've looked myself and seldom find anything detailed enough. Though posts in the developer forum can be enlightening.

If you plug the device into a pc with the usb lead you can browse files on the Garmin. There will be manual at this location GARMIN/Documents/files/pdf/ it is called OM_FR.pdf

You can also view a version online at http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/Edge_Touring_OM_EN.pdf

I believe you can copy you cycle ride files to the garmin directory but I don't know which exact folder to put them in. Somebody else will have to answer that.
