Open API !!!!

If you don't want to be the next nokia, just start by open your API please ;)
  • Dear Garmin Team,

    I have a forerunner 945.

It would be great if you could have a Open API for app development.

Even the developers in Garmin Connect have trouble creating Apps because of the closed system.

If they are having issue receiving data, there is no means to investigate.

Think of the new clients you could get by the new and improved tools.

And, that does not cover the 3rd party integration you will receive from other vendors .

You could receive new information like blood pressure, other scales and medical sleep devices, just too name a few advantages.

I hope this will provide you with the possibilities that you will obtain with an open api.

    1. Improved Garmin Connect community.

      a.  Access given to new developers from around the world.

      b.  Current developers will now have access to new information and improve existing Apps.

    2. Additional users because buy Garmin watch and keep existing 3rd party Equipment.

    3. Garmin Connect with Medical grade devices.

      a.  Blood Pressure

      b.  Sleep Apnea

      c.  Other Medical Devices

  • Garmin, I really hope you are reading this.  Please open up your system. . . let your products stand for themselves (they're great), but not because you lock your systems down to be proprietary.

  • - that is not accurate. there is no openly available web API - it is closed. you cannot just get a token for your private use, like so many other web APIs (google, atlassian, github, and on and on). no, you have to apply and pay up.

I actually have tried applying, it comes with a very significant cost barrier. its like getting a developer SDK license in the 80's / 90's for some systems. really expensive.

also, dont remember if they actually only intend it for companies...

    see this post also: https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-web/109390/garmin-please-look-at-strava-for-a-developer-api-done-right/1328142#1328142

This is the reason that they play cat and mouse with consumers that want to, say update their activity names or descriptions, etc via a script. There are sooo many libraries on github by desperate private people that just want to have access to their data. If only garmin would choose a more open path...

  • probably the only way to compel garmin to code of conduct is to open up a class action law suite. a really sad state of affairs.

And what exactly do you want to sue them for?

You can access you data freely as much as you want (either directly from the watch over the USB cable, or export the entire data history at the page Export Your Data), and then you can do whatever you wish with it. I know no law that would oblige a private company making their proprietary software open to the public free of charge.
