Brand New Garmin 310XT will not sync with Mac

I just purchased two 310XTs (one for me and my wife) and neither will connect via the Garmin Connect application. We just spent the day on a 10 mile hike, and would like to log the data.

We both are running 10.9.4, and have tried both cables, and connecting to both computers.

Some of the troubleshooting I've read suggests doing a hard reset of the device (after making sure sync information is turned on), but I find this ridiculous. I've had these devices less than 72 hours. If they are already unable to sync with a computer, why did I buy them?
  • The 310XT doesn't connect to your computer via cable. The provided USB cable is only for charging the device. You have to connect the ANT+ stick to a USB port on your computer and then download, install and configure the Garmin Express software which can be found here.

    All of the information is covered in the little black quick start guide that should have been included in the packaging for both of your devices.
