Stop new account on forum. Seriously?

Until there's a solution regarding all the spams. Can you, Garmin, stop the possibility to create new accounts? Seriously. It's hundreds of the every day in many sections.

Anyone more agree? Some people, real people, will be effected but it sucks here and it's annoying. Slows down the forum and take time to clean up.

Not a Garmin Connect problem but this is the closest I get to a forum related problem.
  • Totally agree with Travis... Moderate initial posts of new users (that doesn't mean moderate post 1, but automatically allow post 2,3,4,5... - it should be moderation of any newly posting user's posts until he is unmoderated)

vBulletin 4.x should allow this configuration to be made.

I use many good forums (many are vBulletin) that have virtually no spam and no moderation queue is required for new users. Moderating such that a new user doesn't see his post for days due to the time it takes a mod to sort through them, just puts users off coming back. It puts me off at least.

Automatic filtering of registered users is usually the key. The spammers are robots. Decent forum software is able to put enough challenges in the registration to block them. Likewise automatic spam recognition on the content of a post, much like Spamassassin for mail servers. That can place suspicious posts in a spam queue but still lets probably genuine users to post.

Another thing that can be done is block posts with links in initial posts. Though this is frustrating in a support forum where often to show evidence of your problem you need to post a link (more so here were many need to post a link to a .fit file).

As for "sorting out the software", should really say sort out the configuration given it's an off the shelf forum package.
  • While reading through this thread, 5 new spam posts got posted. ::rollseyes::
