Unable to upload. 310XT

I am unable to upload data from my 310XT to Garmin Connect. Do I need this Express thing everyone is talking about? Is it something I need to download? Up until a week ago I would just plug in the ANT stick, turn on my watch and it would upload. Are my problems due to the awful (IMHO) new Connect?
This is getting very frustrating!! I uninstalled the ANT software, and attempted to download and install Express on a Vista machine. The install fails halfway through. I then downloaded and ran the Microsoft.NETframework repair tool and tried again to install. Still no luck. Is there any way to go back to the ANT?
