Garmin Edge 500 How Do I Split One Activity Into More?

Former Member

Hello,

Three times now I have ended up with several days worth of rides in one activity. Is there a way to split it up?

I converted an activity file into .tcx, and tried removing all but one day. When I upload it again, Garmin Connect says it is a duplicate. I tried renaming the file but it is still a "duplicate".

Help please?

  • hi Karl,

Attach the offending .fit file(s) in a reply and I should be able to remove the data that isn't required via the Fit File Repair Tool. If you are able to give me dates/times/distances of the rides involved then that will assist.

    cheers

    Hello Mike,

I may do that, but I would rather be able to do it myself. Does it really require software to edit? That seems like overkill.

Plus, I have a weird computer situation. I have both a Mac and a Windoze machine. I can upload to the Mac, but the Windoze machine does not even recognize my device! So here I am at home on weekends able to upload, but not run that repair tool. Sheesh.

  • hi Karl,

You could always open the .fit file with a text editor and try and work out where the offending portions of the ride(s) are?

I think I read somewhere that Strava allows you to trim/crop your rides? I'm don't use Strava so can't vouch for how correct that is or how useable that function may be.

    Anyways my offer still stands.

    cheers

    Hi Mike,

Yes, I tried trimming the file and, as I said, Garmin thinks it is a duplicate.

Strava allows you to crop an activity, but again, when I try to upload an edited version it STILL thinks the file is a duplicate.

I have attached one activity. It has 2 rides, 7/7 and 7/9. The second has 4 rides, 7/12, 7/13, 7/16, and 7/18, but is apparently too big, 3MB.

    Regards,
    Karl
  • When you split the activity, are you changing the value of the Id element? I believe Garmin Connect keys off of this to tell if the activity is unique or not.

    Hello Travis,

I could have sworn I did that the first time. I remember replacing dates at the start of the file. However, I just tried it now, making a point of changing the Id, and it seems to have uploaded! Of course, I did not change the summary data, so I will need to go back and play some more.

    Thanks,
    Karl
  • Hi Karl,

Do you still want me to split the files up into days?

I'm looking at your first ride on the 7th and trying to work out what has happened to cause the straight effect that you can see in this pic. Was this a commute ride from your home to a bus that then took you into Seattle where you commuted to your work? It would go a long way to explaining the elapsed time value that I am seeing.
I'm also not sure whether to rely on your GPS data for you distance or on the actual distance that your Edge has computed but if this was a commute ride then I will disregard the GPS distance and stick with the actual distance.

    cheers

    Hi Mike,

Yes, the first ride was a bike/bus/bike commute from home in Tacoma to the bus stop, then the Seattle bus stop to work, then ride to the room I am renting in Seattle. The actual Edge distance should be the correct one. I usually manage to keep that as a single activity, but I have had days when the silly thing messes that up. The Edge works really well...when I can figure out how to make it work for me. A better manual would surely help.

  • hi Karl,

    Right! Onto it now!

file 1 - 7 Jul - your overall elapsed time is going to be strange when you upload this file to GC as you can see in this pic and this pic when you look at the Time (Rel) values in the highlighted cells. Your ride distance should be correct though. Give this file a try.

    file 2 - 8 Jul - give this file a try.

As for that 3Mb file - get yourself a free Dropbox account, drop the file in there and then share the link to it and I will grab it and split those four rides up for you.

    cheers

    Hi Mike,

Thank you! The first one worked fine. When I click on the link for the second one, I get a DropBox error.

    Error (404)
