What are total strokes?

On GC there is a column for total strokes - I have a Edge 800. Would this be total number of pedals for the ride?

Yesterday's ride reported around 3000 and today's 25. What are total strokes and why does it seem to random?

Update: I think I found the problem. It must be total number of pedals. For this ride my sensor was not positioned correctly and it was not picking up the cadence.

I have been using a Garmin Edge 1000 bike computer for over two months (I previously used an Edge 305) that I just noticed was showing total strokes on Garmin Connect. (I rarely scroll over that far on the Connect activity page). I use my old Garmin cadence/speed sensor, but cadence rpm is accurate on the 1000. Since I do not swim with my bike, it must refer to total pedal revolutions.

I had a look through the Ant+ api documentation. Its for swimming/rowing (strokes), walking (steps) and cycling (full revolutions/cadence), running (strides)
