Communicator plug-in?

Only had my Garmin Edge Touring 24 hours and haven't managed to use it as yet. Had my issue with Express sorted, but now im having problems with Connect.

when I plug in my unit it syncs ok, but if I try to download a route from the pc to the Edge unit I get the error message 'Garmin Communicator Plug in NOT detected. Download and install now'. So I download it and each time the message 'You have Communicator Plugin upto date Version 4.2.0.0' and it still wont work. beginging to wish I'd stayed with Strava on an iPhone

Can anyone help me on this one, please. Im running Windows 7 if that helps.

  • You can still stay with Strava if you like it better. I use Strava, the old Garmin Connect and Ridewithgps regularly. You probably can avoid the upload issues with Garmin Connect if you just do 'Imports', to the new Garmin Connect or 'manual uploads' to the old Garmin Connect. Little more work, but you don't have to have Garmin Communicator or Garmin Express on your PC/Mac.

    Thanks for your reply.

Really don't understand the manual side of things, if something doesn't work im kind of stuck not being a 'pc' person.

My local MTB club has put up a ride on Garmin Connect that I want/need to upload to my device.
  • You can call Garmin Support and work with a support rep till your issue is resolved. I know it's a pain to call them as you sometimes have long wait times, but once you get them on the phone they are stuck with you till you end the call.

As for sending courses from Garmin Connect to your edge..... Garmin Connect only provides one way to get courses from GC to the device. Unfortunately that is with the "Send to device" function. There is no allowance on GC to export the file so it can be manually installed on the device.

A short term solution would be to simply get one of the other club members that have a Garmin Edge device to try using their PC/Mac to put the course on your Edge Touring.

If you want further help here, then I and others need to know a few things:
    1) are you using the new Garmin Connect, or the old (classic) Garmin Connect?
    2) did you install Garmin Express, if so what version is it?
    3) If you installed Garmin Express, was Garmin Communicator installed afterwards? I ask this because if you are using the new Garmin Connect, Garmin Communicator is not necessary and although I don't know for certain, installing it after installing Garmin Express might screw something up.
    4) are you using the Garmin USB cable that came with your device? Not all usb cables are created equal, believe it or not.
    5) when you have the usb cable attached, can you see the edge touring as a storage drive when you use your computers file browser?

Thank you for the quick response. going to try and set it all up on the wifes laptop, then if that doesn't work will call the support team. Many thanks again

  • If you are using the new Garmin Connect, only install Garmin Express. If you are using the old Garmin Connect, only install Garmin Communicator.

I only bought the unit on Friday, so would assume its the new Connect. Also have Express installed and have run the updates. But it still says it needs Communicator to download to the Edge touring unit although it syncs ok.

Is there an easy way to know if I have the new or old Connect software?

  • Garmin Connect is a website, not software on your PC/Mac. The new Garmin Connect site is supposed to look something like the pic at this link..... http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2014/01/ces-announcement-garmin-connect-redesign-.html#.UuGbY2TnbfY

I still use the old Garmin Connect site so I'm limited in what I can tell you about the new site. There have been plenty of other users having issues with sending courses to their devices, then again others don't seem to have an issue at all with it. If the sending of courses is the only issue you are having, then I'd recommend you contact Garmin Support unless some other user comes along and knows specifically what to do. You might also look at all the other posts in this Garmin Connect forum and it's subforums about users with the same issue. I have not followed them closely, maybe someone came up with a solution.
