Map data for my older activities are no longer accessible on Garmin Connect!

Hello there,

As a regular (i.e. daily) Garmin Connect user here in northern Italy (Lago Maggiore), I have just noticed that the maps for my older activities - which worked perfectly until recently - cannot now be displayed.

Instead of the actual maps (i.e. for northern Italy), a map of what appears to be South Kansas City in the United States is displayed.

The following are examples of my activities that illustrate the problem:

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/15360136
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/3424261
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/16918255
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/17966748
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/15186025

Please advise me how I can fully access these activities again, as they are very important as references for local running courses, both for me and many colleagues.

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

Best regards,
Niall McCormick

EDIT: I also have this issue. Recent activity seems to display map and chart data just fine, but older activity it is not present. When I export to the old software (Training Center) the map data is still NOT available. But when I look at that same activity from before it was ever sent to GC the map data IS available. Not sure right now if the data got stripped on the TC export or the GC export.

I'm new to Garmin Connect and this is giving me pause about fully switching to it. Does Garmin Connect erase map data over time? Seems to me this would defeat its intended purpose.

I can confirm the exporting a recent activity from GC to TC has the map data available. This is making me think GC is deleting the map data and only keeping total/split timings for older activities. If this is true there is no way I will be switching. TC still has map data from my very first run the 305... just lacks online access.

  • This is very worrying but needs a proper answer from Garmin. Have you reported it as an issue to garmin support?

I notice that your runs go back to 2009 what is the most recent that has a problem - I have runs from January 2012 that are OK

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Yes it would be extremely depressing if activities are being deleted, especially without any notice being given.

Later today (Saturday) I will check my past activities to try to pin down when the issue starts.

Now I have not contacted Garmin Support - maybe someone could give me their email address? Perhaps they also monitor this forum?

    ciao, Niall

I have checked: my oldest activity for which the map data are still present on Garmin Connect, is 22 July 2009.

All of my activities prior to that, including an important and sentimental marathon and several half-marathons, no longer have map data present.

How is this possible? How can map data be removed without any official communication?

    The same issue over here.
The most recent activity that does not show the map data is January 5, 2014.
The oldest activity that does show map data is January 12, 2014.

But for me, I started using a new device between those 2 activities.
At first, I thought this could be the cause, although that would be very strange.
After reading this, I think the problem isn't related to the change of devices.

This looks like a problem I reported on June 6: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?89334-Maps-not-displaying-tracks

I contacted Garmin support and have not heard from them, except for the automatic response which confirms they received my message. It's been over a month.

Hey, it looks like one of my activities which had stopped showing map data is now working again. But another one of my activities is still broken.

Maybe they are doing some mass data migration which is taking months? :)

    Hi guys / gals,

I have just put the message (below) on Garmin Support - Category: Garmin Connect Troubleshooting, Subject: Map data not displayed - requesting urgent feedback. The system assures me that "A Product Support specialist will respond to you within 3 business days." I will keep you posted.

URGENT FEEDBACK REQUIRED: I have just noticed that the map data for my older (i.e. before 22 July 2009) activities - which worked perfectly until relatively recently - cannot now be displayed. Instead of the actual maps (for northern Italy), a map of South Kansas City in the United States is displayed. Example: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/4656298. Please advise me how I can access the map data these activities again, as they are extremely important as references for local running courses for me and many colleagues, and also for sentimental reasons. Thank you in advance for urgently required feedback.
  • No feedback?
I have some activities with missing map too, but only a few.

Just checked, it started showing right.

Another workout is not right. It really looks like they fix activities we show as an example. Sneaky.
