Personal records auto-updating

Hi guys,

I couldn't find a thread about this particular problem yet, so I decided to start a new thread.

I own a Forerunner 110. When I upload my runs to Garmin Connect, I can manually select a run to be a personal record (for example fastest 5km). It does have to be a run of somewhere close to 5km. So if I run a fast 8km, I cannot select 5km's of that run to be my fastest 5km.

A colleague of mine has the exact same watch. Let's say he runs a real fast 8km. Garmin Connect then automatically selects the fastest 5km and makes is his new 5km record. It does the same for his fastest 1km.

When I run the same fast 8km, Garmin Connect doesn't automatically searches for a part of this run that makes f.e. my fastest 5km. I also cannot select it manually to be my fastest 5km.

What am I doing wrong? Do I have to change some settings to make sure that my Garmin Connect works the same as my colleague's?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Sorry to bump this thread, but am I the only one having this problem?
  • No, I've read of others that have an issue with PR's. I just don't pay attention to them, I know what I've done well and what I've not. But if it annoys you enough, contact Garmin Support. They handle the website issues too.

I'm fairly certain that your friend is mistaken. Even Garmin says that is not how their system works. According to the documentation (click the little question mark icon near the words Personal Records on the personal records page), your activity has to be approximately equal to the PR distance for the personal records system to to work. So if you ran for 8km, Garmin Connect isn't going to pick the fastest 5km, 1km and 1mi sections of that activity and check to see if that would have been records.

That said, I don't think the system to detect PRs works anyway, so none of this is really relevant. If you want accurate PRs, chances are good that you'll have to manually manage them.

I have the same issue. My wife has a Garmin Forerunner 220 and she ran a fast 6km today. Garmin Connect automatically picked the fastest 1km, 1mi, and 5km for that run as PRs. But my Fenix 2 doesn't show anything for the same 6 km run. What's wrong with my watch and Garmin Connect?
  • Same Issue, I have the 410XT, My understanding is it should automatically select the best pace for each distance.
  • I've never had it do that and I wouldn't want it - what's the point of me having a PR for a fast downhill mile of a longer run for instance? I generally set the PRs myself - would be nice to have them for other distances too.

I wish the system generally worked like it does for your wife. That would be wonderful.
