Garmin 910 w/ Microsoft Surface Pro 2

When will these devices be compatible? Currently, I cannot download/transfer data to Garmin ANT+ stick from 910xt on my Surface laptop/tablet and it is really frustrating and inconvenient. To download workouts to Garmin Connect or TrainingPeaks from my 910, I need to use my girlfriend's MacBook which SUCKS!!!
  • As far as I can tell, you should be able to install Garmin Express on a Surface Pro 2. Your Surface has an Intel i5 processor and runs Windows 8.1; It is really just a regular old laptop as far as the software is concerned. What seems to be the problem exactly?
  • I believe the Surface 2 does not recognize the ANT+ usb because it is not USB 3.0. If I use Garmin Express, how does it load data from Garmin 910?
  • USB3 ports are supposed to be backward compatible, so it should just work. Unfortunately, it appears that there is a known issue with the ANT+ sticks and USB3 ports. According to my google search results, people have had luck using USB extension cables and hubs between the SurfacePro 2 and the ANT+ stick.

Doesn't some of the Surfaces run Windows RT 8.x, and not regular Windows 8.x? RT is a different OS than regular windows.
  • Yes, I realize that. This user specifically asked about a Surface 2 Pro, and my response clearly indicated I was speaking about that device. All of the Pro models (Surface Pro 2, Surface Pro 3) run x86_64 compatible hardware and regular Windows 8.1. The lower-end models (Surface/Surface RT, Surface 2) run ARM hardware and Windows 8.1 RT.

If you do a little searching, you'll find that others have run into problems with the ANT+ stick on the Surface Pro series. They were able to resolve their issues by connecting some other USB device directly to the computer, and then connecting the ANT+ stick to that.

I've also seen people that misquoted a specific model of the hardware they are running. Are you saying that some people connected a USB hub to their Surface Pro and than put the ant+ stick into the hub?
  • A real notebook/PC with win 8.x doesn't have this issue (I've used both), so there is something odd with the HW/SW on the Surface pros.... This sounds like a MS problem, as people with a surface shouldn't need to carry a USB hub for this to work.
  • As I said above USB3 is supposed to be backward compatible. Obviously there is some sort of issue with some USB3 implementations, including that found on the Surface Pro series. It should be noted that this problem isn't specific so the Surface Pro. A google search and a bit of reading confirms this.

The take away is that there are occasionally problems connecting an ANT+ stick to a USB3 port. The Surface Pro 2 is just one system affected by this problem. Using some sort of intermediary device to dumb the connection down to USB2 causes the problem to go away.

  • Correction, I have the non-Pro Surface 2. Will there be Garmin driver for RT8.1 OS?
