Garmin 810 not tracking actual ride route.

I've noticed that my garmin isn't tracking the actual cycling route, but rather is kind of estimating the path for certain areas, which makes it impossible to measure segment times, etc. in either Garmin Connect or Strava. This is noticeable on switchbacks and hills primarily.

I've attached a picture of a small segment that I trial myself on and I can't get an accurate measurement based on how my Garmin shows the route. Any suggestions on what I need to do to fix this? Driving me crazy - especially when I'm purposely looking to do better on certain climbs and can't get accurate data.

Thank you.

  • How fast are you going and what setting is your recording rate on? At 20 mph you are going over 29 feet in one second. If you are recording data every two seconds the plots in your data are 58 feet apart. This presents issues for the program interpreting the data when trying to show on a map. Especially if there are switch backs. There is no way for a program to know if you stay on the road or not from the data it gets.
