Why does Garmin continue to make Garmin Connect more difficult to use? Each and every so-called improvement just makes for a more convoluted, pain-in-the-backside experience. Makes no sense that I need to open two applications (Garmin Express and Garmin Connect) to upload my data.

Come on Garmin--Apply the KISS principle and keep it simple.

    Garmin Connect is a website that you open in your browser. Garmin Express is a program on your pc/mac that facilitates the upload of data to Garmin Connect.

    There are security issues involved with allowing websites to directly access information on your computer. So that is why Garmin express is necessary to try and make an upload process that requires less user intervention.

    Not that I'm saying Garmin Express is a great thing. I tried it once when it was new and only being used as a map update utility. I didn't like it then so I uninstalled it. Garmin Communicator was the means to upload to Garmin Connect back then and that is what I still use. However Garmin Communicator does not work with the new Garmin Connect. I still use the old Garmin Connect, although I'm finding the other fitness sites more to my liking every day.

    I hope Garmin doesn't one day say that my activity data on their devices is only usable by them or their licensed third party developers.

    Yes, it makes no sense. You only need to have Garmin Express running. If configured properly, it should automatically get activities off of your device and uploaded Garmin Connect.

    ANT to Internet is the Reason

    Voiceresponse is essentially correct, but, as a software engineer, I can add some detail. The device communicates to the computer using a low-level, low power, real time embedded protocol, the ANT protocol. This protocol requires a dedicated, quick response device to partner with. Communicating with this protocol with your local PC (through a transceiver embedded in the ANT USB device) is practical and efficient, but trying to do this over the Internet / World Wide Web would be extraordinarily difficult and impractical. The solution is to use a two tiered approach where the data is aggregated by the PC application, and then transferred (probably in an XML format) to the Connect web site.

    I'm new to this, but this has been my experience... Once I end an activity, the Garmin Express connects and transfers the data. By the time I finish up and get over to my computer, Garmin Connect has the data. It actually is a two step process, but perceptually it seems like one step.
