tcx files from runtastic don't upload

Hello.

I was searching the forum and the internet for several weeks now and tried different conversions for and back, but I didn't find the/a solution.
My apologies if this questions is answered somewhere in the forum already.

I was a long time runtatstic user. I recently "converted" to an Edge 510 because the iPhone is really limited when it comes to it being a bike computer.
However. I would like to import all my runtastic activities into Garmin connect.
runtastic gives me three options for downloading/exporting activities: tcx-files, gpx-files and kml-files.
I never tried the kml files....
Garmin connect tells me that it can handle tcx, gpx and fit files for manual upload. Great. So far so good....
When I try to import/upload the tcx-files from runtastic into Garmin Connect, Garmin Connect quits with an error message telling "that the import went wrong", but not WHAT the problem is.
When I do import the gpx-files Garmin Connect does import/upload them, but some of the data is incorrect. I.e. avg. heart rates, cadence are not showing or are wrong, etc.

Any ideas/suggestions?

The tcx-file i was trying this with is 4.5 MB big (was a 100 mile bike ride...) which I can't upload here.
I am happy to send it of to somebody to get eventually analyzed.

I'd like to understand what is wrong in that file (and all other files). I have 150 activities to import in Garmin Connect if possible.

Thank you for the support.

Sven
  • Upload the file somewhere and send me a link. I'll take a look at it.

I had a simliar export/import problem. When I exported data from runtastic in tcx format and imported in Garmin basecamp heart rate was not included. I imported the tcx file in Rubitrack and exported this track in tcx format from Rubitrack afterwards and imported to Basecamp and voilà: everything was okay, heartrate was included. Obviously there is a slight difference in format between the devices/plattforms. But most probably someone can give more exact help
Orgelfreund on Mac OS X 10.9
  • @Sven: BaseCamp doesn't have any problems with the file, but there is one anomaly: trackpoint 8129 has an (impossible) elevation of -32768 meters. Probably Connect doesn't like that...
Open the file in a text editor, search for the value -32768 and replace it with 830 (hafway between the elevations of the adjacent trackpoints)

The elevations in the file are not the "real" ones (recorded by the device); they are replaced by Runtastic with values based on SRTM data (-32768 indicates a void in the SRTM data)
  • Actually, the fix is quite simple.

    • Open the .tcx file in a text editor (wordpad on the PC works well, notepad does not)
    • Locate the line that reads <Activity Sport="cycling">.
    • Change the word cycling to Biking. When you are done, the line should read <Activity Sport="Biking">.
    • Save the file.
    • Upload it to Garmin Connect via Import/Upload on the Activities page.

    Hi.
    thank you for the suggestions.
I tried both. Unfortunately it didn't work. I had the suspicion with the "activity" wording before and tried that already.
    Nonetheless. I tried it again.
So here is what I did this time.
Downloaded a fresh copy from runtatsic.
I first edited (in my Mac Texteditor program) the activity from "cycling" to "Biking".
It still didn't upload. Then I fixed the wrong Altitude point to 830.
    Still didn't work.
As I was not sure if my "mac text editor" eventually screws the file up,
did the whole procedure again and used a xml-editor (Serna-free 4.2) to make the changes.
    Still same result.

I can imagine that I do screw something up while editing the file.

    Any further suggestions?

Thank you very much for your time to help me.

    some additional things I noticed:
it doesn't matter what sort of activity I export from runtastic (running, mountain biking, cycling). if I download/export it as tcx-file, it doesn't upload to garmin connect.
When I export my activity from runtastic as gpx-file, it does upload to garmin connect. the imported activity even shows heart rate. Although the heart rate data is incorrect, which makes sense as it is not even included in the gpx-file.

Does anyone have an idea what garmin connect doesn't like about the tcx-files?

    Thx.

    Hi All,
o.k. here is the solution. I got it figured out. Thank you everybody for the support an the hints which led me to the solution.
I was able to import all my files after naming the "activity" correctly AND using the right editor.

In order to edit the tcx-file finally I used WordPad on a WinPC. Apparently the Editor on my Mac didn't work. Neither does Notepad on the PC. Thank you Travis.Vitek for that hint.
I changed the activity type from "cycling" to "Biking" and it worked as suggested by Travis.Vitek. Thanks again.

For all my other activities I had to choose an activity category from Garmin Connect which is in the Master-Category. I.e. Garmin Connect let's me choose different biking-activities (Mountain, Road, etc.), but in the import file only the "Biking"-acivity will be accepted.

    Also very important:
The first letter must be CAPITAL!!
Runtastics exports the file with the activity written all in small letters.
    Garmin Connect doesn't like that.
I.e., my export file of a running activity had "running" in the activity line and DID NOT import.
After changing to "Running" it imported flawless.

    Thanks again.

  • Yeah, usually when I give directions I'm very precise. Glad you got it worked out.
