The most common reason for this is that your activity isn't visible to the public. If you look to the left of the Share button, you will see a lock icon. Click that, and change the setting to Everyone. Then the Share button should be enabled for the activity.
If you want to share the activity with people that are in your Connections or Groups, you can just copy/paste the URL for the activity from your browsers address bar into an e-mail.
