Multi-sport function and multi-sport activities

So I did a brick session, first in many many years, a run-bike-run. My elderly Garmin Forerunner 301 supports this quite well, it even lets me time transitions. Trouble is, when I upload this activity to GC it treats it as three separate activities, with no view of overall time or the transition times.
Back in the day, the very old version of the Garmin sw that sat on the PC would recognise a multi-sport activity and treat it as such.
I was thinking of upgrading to a 910XT, but if the analysis of multisport activities and races that's available for that on GC is as crap as what I've seen so far, then I'll be looking at alternatives.
  • Does anyone know if the "modern" site has the same issue, or does it actually have the brains to provide analysis for everything you can do with the Garmin unit?
  • Does anyone else get the same problem, and how do you fix it?
  • Does the 910XT suffer the same problem, and is a swim recorded as such in GC, or does it just fall into the "Other" bucket all the time?

Finally, I've tried "switch to modern", and although it all looks very funky, it seems that it only wants to work with Garmin Express and doesn't want to play with the Communicator plug-in at all. Although GEx recognises my elderly 301, whenever I try to synch it I get an error message that the servers are not available. Is this just that my 301 is too old and clunky, or is it a common occurrence even with more modern devices?

  • Your description of the handling of multisport activities is consistent with what I've seen since using Garmin Connect for the last few years. That is how it works with Garmin Connect, regardless of what multisport device you use. The one difference that I see is that transitions are recorded as separate activities, so that data is all there. I'm not sure if this is a feature of later multisport devices (310XT and 910XT do this) or not.

Many people complain about it, but I'm sure Garmin has their reasons for doing it that way. One reason that comes to mind is activity matching. If a multisport activity is stored as a single activity with a type set to multisport, then it becomes impossible to match the run leg of a triathlon when searching or when trying to find a run PR (say you have a 5K PR during a sprint triathlon), or when trying to match segments.
  • It does (at least to me) make more sense to separate them, however I have always wished Garmin Connect or others would let you select activities to aggregate so you could view the overall stats/averages.

    Greetings all,

I just uploaded a triathlon today, tracked under multisport, and it uploaded as a single event! :O

All previously uploaded multisport data, to include a triathlon just last month, uploaded as distinct events: swim-T1-bike-T2-run; I like and hope individual events will still be possible…

Anyone know why this might be?

    please advise.

  • It is my understanding that if you use the Auto Multisport functionality, you'll get the multisport event in Garmin Connect. Someone posted that they were able to export the data from each segment of the multisport event and re-upload the data to get the activity split up again.
