Activities from previous years are not showing map or chart data

You probably never renamed them? You need to change them from "Untitled" to retain all data.

I have the same issue. All of my activities are named (something other than "Untitled"), but those activities from pre-July 2009 do not display the map or chart data (e.g., Timing, Elevation, Heart Rate). Any help appreciated.

I don't think so, this problem has only recently happened. They all showed the map data perfectly fine before.

I have the exact same problem but for slightly older dates. In my case runs prior to about 2010 have suddenly lost their map data. The map simply defaults to Olathe, Kansas which is Garmin's HQ I believe. I emailed technical support last week, and about 4 days later received a reply that my situation is 'unfortunate.... there would not be a way to get the data back if it is that old...." I replied and said I was very disappointed that they do not backup user data. Many of my runs were around the globe and it was always fun to go back and look at specific routes I've run in the past on return visits. I'm looking at other more reliable services now.....

Wow, they've lost our data and they can't say/do anything about it?!! Surely there should be some sort of announcement and explanation.

Well, I exported one of the activities to a .tcx and uploaded it to mapmyride and happily it seems the data is still there. Just not being shown on the charts - I guess a bug with the code. Garmin will you fix it please?

Great find - worked for me as well. Exported to a .TCX and uploaded to strava one of my runs from 2006 and sure enough, the map data is still there. It's a miracle!!! THANKS! I too would think that Garmin could fix this.

Why hasn't Garmin addressed this yet?? The data appears to be intact (since it can still be exported properly), but the Garmin Connect website still does not display the map or chart data (e.g., Timing, Elevation, Heart Rate). This really ought to be addressed. I did not carefully upload all my runs, bike rides, etc. to Garmin Connect just to have them disappear/become unusable.

I have emailed Garmin a number of times about this issue but unfortunately I have not had any reply other than an automated reply telling me my message was received.

I wrote to Ray Maker if he can get any statement from Garmin about this issue. My activities are affected as well and I'm very sad about it.
