Confused by cadence

I'm using the Vivofit and an Ambit 2 for my training. Because I want everything in one place, I decided to start bringing my Ambit 2 files into Garmin Connect. I noticed something strange on my imported workout though. The cadence graph show my cadence for running, but on the left side it states my bike cadence, which seems to be half that of the cadence in the graph. Why is it showing bike cadence for an activity that is running?

The activity can be seen here

  • Something wonky is going on. If you download the .gpx file for your activity and upload that, the cadence on the is cut in half, but it still shows bike cadence in the summary data on the left.

When you uploaded your data to Garmin Connect, how did you do it? Did you manually upload a bunch of .gpx files? Do you have access to .tcx or .fit files for those activities? If you do, you might try uploading using those formats to see if the problem is related to how the data is uploaded.

I've been doing some diggin on the internet and it turns out that Suunto has chosen to go with rpm, rather than spm for cadance when running. In other words, if running at 180 steps per minute, it will record it as 90 rpm, rather than 180 spm. Could this be the cause of the problems? I thought that the connect site was able to understand this information in the file due to the fact that the graph shows the correct spm, its just the left bar that has chosen to show rpm instead (and refers to it as bike cadence. Is this an issue on the connect site, or is it a result of Suunto choosing to store the information as rpm, rather than spm?

I have tried importing both fit and tcx files exported from my watch, but garmin connect, or any other site for that matter, has not been able to import them, throwing up errors instead. GPX files are the only ones that seem to work outside of the movescount site.

I know you probably don't support other watches than garmin, but I would love to move my data over to garmin connect. I already have a vivofit, and plan to get a garmin swim as well. It would therefore be nice to be able to collect everything in one place. It would also make me much more inclined to purchase a garmin gps watch as my next purchase once it gets time to replace my Ambit 2.
  • First off, I don't work for Garmin. Second, I don't really know. I'm just looking at the data presented and trying to determine what is going on. If you want to upload a tcx, link me to one of your files and I'll try to figure out why it isn't accepted. Once we figure it out, I can probably help you to repair all of them.

Hehe, I thought the master nickname under your user id meant you where a moderator or something, my bad :p. I'll link to the gpx, tcx files when I get the chance. Thanks for the help so far :).

tcx files work well at Excel...except that I do not know about cadence, column S - "ns2:RunCadence. I do not understand what is that...I can plot informations according to my wishes...
