Segments are down!

"Due to increased popularity, the segment feature is currently down so we can increase capacity. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

To that all I have to say is really? You didn't anticipate popularity with your capacity planning? LOL

And the server and app team should be able to come up with a load balanced, clustered solution that eliminates downtime for increasing capacity. You should be able to do it on the fly.

Hopefully this feature will be back up soon and with a better architecture to support future growth. :)

Hopefully when it comes back up it will work. I've been waiting for weeks for some leaderboards to be populated.
Thanks to strava I know I'm KOM but that's not the point.
Come on garmin get it sorted !
  • I hope they also introduce a way to flag someones ride/segment. I've found and flagged numerous KOM's in Strava that when the details are looked at, they were obviously in a car driving and forgot to turn off their GPS.

NOTCRANIUM...i totally agree. I've had some people riding 75Km/h up a Mountain. I'ts just anyoing when crap like that ranks 1.
  • The list of things the Garmin Connect team has no clue about seems endless. They still can't figure out how to properly scale elevation charts or track equipment yet they rolled out the "modern" Connect that seems like it should be improved yet manages to have fewer useful features than the previous version. Point being none of this should be a surprise.

They could have been using a IoS phone or Android instead of a car. These devices register fast times over short segments. I have flagged multiple KOM's on Strava recently because these devices constantly register times the rider can't possibly do. These devices are called digital EPO for a reason. Anyone who holds a KOM/QOM and uses a phone or android device should be considered suspect, especially if it's a short segment.

I've seen instances like that as well. Speed with no other data to back it up. Usually looking at the map you can tell if it was a phone GPS though. Some of them look like a kid scribbled on the map. :)

Hello I al new on Garmin. Does that mean that I can't upload Garmin Connect Mobile?? I can't with my Iphone5 :(
  • I'm beginning to think the Garmin folks that created the new Garmin Connect are a bunch of hacks. Garmin, do you outsource to the lowest bidder? The segments feature has been down for almost a week now which means they created software that can't handle any sort of capacity or they put it on hardware that can't handle any sort of capacity.

Since hardware is usually pretty easy to resolve (especially in today's world of server virtualization), I'm assuming the code can't handle the load. So while they scramble to fix what they should have tested before lunching, the customers will just have to do without. Garmin, learn to load test!

Garmin has become a company (my personal opinion) that releases hardware with poorly written, poorly tested software. The users are their beta testers and response is slow to address issues that should have never been there to begin with. Garmin, do some real QA before releasing your buggy software!

I'm speaking from my experience with Garmin connect, Garmin Virb, Garmin Vivofit and the Garmin Edge 1000. All of these have crappy, irritating bugs.

    Rant over....

what are segments may I ask?
does this explain why I am not getting my mileage break down? But surely the data will be stored, so when it's back up running I will then be able to see my mileage breakdown?
(or have i made a mistake with my watch settings - it did however tell me the time per mile whilst I running).
    Thanks alot guys ! :)

Also, sorry I'm pretty new to this, it's not possible to view the time per mile on your watch history is it?
    Thanks very much !

Segments are a specific section of road or trail that has been created and named by a user and is viewable by all users. Once created, it will compare your effort against past efforts, as well as other athletes who've run or ridden the same segment through generated leaderboards.

Strava does this very well.....Garmin is still trying to figure out how.

As far as displaying your pace for each mile (assuming this is what you are asking), I don't know that Garmin will do that.
