MFP Integration

I was pretty excited to see MFP integration with GC finally realized earlier this week.

From where I sit (based on only one full day of data) it looks pretty promising. I think the clear concept here is that MFP is in charge of counting what you eat and GC is in charge of counting what you burn.

Some personal data from yesterday—

From Garmin Connect I/0 Widget:
2,464 Calories Consumed
747 Active calories (burned)
1,717 Net Calories
1,610 MFP Daily Calorie Consumption Goal
107 Calories over MFP Goal

From GC Total calories widget:
2,573 Total Calorie Expenditure
1,826 Garmin BMR
747 Active Calories

From MFP Web App:
2,464 Calories Consumed
2,280 Daily Goal (1,610 baseline goal + 670 in exercise that day)
1,900 Calories Burned From Normal Daily Activities

If I take the 2,573 Calories GC says I burned on Friday and subtract the 1,900 MFP says I should have burned through "normal daily activity" the difference of 673 calories is very very close to the 670 that was added to my MFP daily caloric consumption goal as an exercise allowance.

In short, I am cautiously optimistic that all of this is working as intended. I would love to get feedback from others.

As a follow-up, I have almost all good news. As reported above, if you record simultaneous Activities on your Vivofit and a “superior” device (Forerunner, Edge, Fenix) at the same time, the Calories will NOT be duplicated in Garmin Connect. At least not in the active portion of total calories which is where they matter. However, they WILL be duplicated in MyFitnessPal.

The good news is that, all you have to do to solve this problem is to quit recording activities on your VF when those same activities are also being recorded by your “superior” device. GC is now doing a beautiful job of ignoring VF non-Activity activity (not HRM linked) laid down at the same time as your Forerunner or Edge is tracking the same exercise. It is then sending the correct information along to MFP.

To test this, I did a half marathon on Sunday with the FR going and HRM linked and the VF on my arm but not HRM linked. Both GC and MFP reported only the FR calories as active + a little for VF based activity unrelated to the run. On Monday, I ran two 5K’s and took a 2 mile walk. I wore the VF all day but never linked it to a HRM. I wore the FR on the first of the two 5K’s only. Both GC and MFP gave me appropriate calorie expenditure numbers for all of the day’s activities without duplication. The FR numbers were definitely used for the first run and the VF estimates were used for the balance of the day.

Clearly, Garmin has finally gotten this nailed. It might be nice if it worked while simultaneously recording activities on both your VF and Forerunner but there is really no point in recording to both devices at the same time so just don’t do it and you will be happy with the results. I finally am :).
