MFP Integration

I was pretty excited to see MFP integration with GC finally realized earlier this week.

From where I sit (based on only one full day of data) it looks pretty promising. I think the clear concept here is that MFP is in charge of counting what you eat and GC is in charge of counting what you burn.

Some personal data from yesterday—

From Garmin Connect I/0 Widget:
2,464 Calories Consumed
747 Active calories (burned)
1,717 Net Calories
1,610 MFP Daily Calorie Consumption Goal
107 Calories over MFP Goal

From GC Total calories widget:
2,573 Total Calorie Expenditure
1,826 Garmin BMR
747 Active Calories

From MFP Web App:
2,464 Calories Consumed
2,280 Daily Goal (1,610 baseline goal + 670 in exercise that day)
1,900 Calories Burned From Normal Daily Activities

If I take the 2,573 Calories GC says I burned on Friday and subtract the 1,900 MFP says I should have burned through "normal daily activity" the difference of 673 calories is very very close to the 670 that was added to my MFP daily caloric consumption goal as an exercise allowance.

In short, I am cautiously optimistic that all of this is working as intended. I would love to get feedback from others.

I'm a new Vivofit user, and got the synch working GC/MFP a few days ago. All was going well. Then today, no calories come over from MFP to GC. I have disconnected and re-connected from both sides. Nothing. Any troubleshooting ideas? I have nothing complicated at all, no other devices, and it was working fine for the first few days. GRRRRR... Thanks for any help!

Are calories expended coming over from GC to MFP?
  • I'm having the same issue. Calories expended are getting picked up by MFP but GC doesn't pick up calories consumed. This did work fine but seemed to stop at some point over the weekend.

My issue is that when I workout using my Vivofit with a HRM it will list in Activities that I burned 400 calories for example, but when it syncs to MFP it is stating I burned a much smaller fraction of that. Everything from what I can tell is set up correctly on both ends and I even made sure the "Enable Negative Adjustments" option in MFP was enabled. Am I doing something wrong and not understanding how the process should work correctly or is there an issue with syncing between MFP and/or Garmin?

TKAMEN, What does Garmin Connect show for your BMR in the total calories graph for a day that is complete such as yesterday? What does MFP show for Calories Burned from normal daily activity? What is your MFP setting under "How would you describe your normal daily activities?"? I advise Sedentary for Vivofit users.

Unfortunately, both GC and MFP try to allow for some activity in their estimates of your Base Burn. Since you are measuring all of your activity, you have to exceed this fudge factor before your activity based calories begin to count towards weight loss or increased calorie consumption allowance. For some background information on the subject, I suggest you read the first post in this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?90474-Vivofit-Calorie-Expenditure-Mess

My GBMR (as you refer to it) is 3271 Calories. MFP has this listed as 3370 Calories. So there is a 99 Calorie difference between the two. If I take the total calories burned from yesterday that Garmin Connect shows and subtract it from what actually synced over to MFP it is a 94 Calorie difference. Now, I wasn't aware that when you adjust your weight in Connect that you had to sync things by clicking Send to Device and then using Garmin Express for it to update. Could this be why things are off?

You make an interesting point TKAMEN. When I try to reconcile my daily deficit between MFP and GC. I seem to always end up with a 3 calorie unexplained difference. That send to device link seems to come and go. Mt weight changes every day (tends to fluctuate somewhat wildly) and yet my GBMR almost never changes. Part of me says it's close enough . . . move on. The obsessive part of me says that I must understand the "why" behind the disconnect. At present, I cannot explain it and that is eating at me :(.

    Help? Anybody out there?

Ran in to another oddity. I did a boat load of vigorous yard work this weekend and created a manual entry for it in MFP. Instead of displaying it as calories burned it added it as calories consumed which threw my numbers way off. After playing around with things I noticed that if you deleted the auto adjustment added by Garmin Connect it would then show the yard work as calories burned. My wife had the same issue. Any extra activity that we added that was outside of stuff automatically added by Garmin would show as calories consumed. At this point as the integration doesn't seem to be working at all I disconnected the two apps and will just manually enter in my workouts from the data Connect gives me into MFP. The only downside is that I lose the extra calories burned from everyday walking and moving around. Not a huge issue though as that has only been like 110 calories or so. I really hope they get this all straightened out.

Why don't you try adding your manual activity in GC instead of MFP?

I kind of already tried that via the app on my phone, but there is not a spot to enter in the calories that you burned there which pretty much defeats the purpose. You can add that info on the web, but I very rarely use it and mainly input everything on my phone.
