Why Garmin Communicator Plugin?

I just got a Garmin 500. I followed the instructions on Garmin Connect and installed Garmin Express which is advertised as the only program I need on my computer. But when I needed to send the course (created on Garmin Connect) to my device, I was asked to install Garmin Communicator Plugin. Is it for real or a bug? It is really a bad design if both need to be installed.

I am a fan of Garmin GPS products, but I am becoming more and more disappointed with Garmin Connect now compared to you know its major competitor.
  • Ok, looks like no Garmin Communicator Plugin is needed by switching to the Modern view of Garmin Connect. BTW, Garmin Connect should provide a feature to generate a cue sheet, or gpx file for the created course in case the primary Garmin GPS device is not amiable. I understand Garmin Connect would like their users to use Garmin GPS devices as much as possible. It is always a classic debate whether the business should lean more toward handsets or services.
  • You don't need the Communicator plugin and that will be discontinued anyway.
I don't use G Express following adverse reports of bugginess and device crashes. I use WebUpdater for firmware updates and PC transfer to the device NewFiles folder for tcx or gpx files.

An instructive thought re Garmin's software capabilities:
