garmin 310xt no longer connecting with my ANT agent

Hi,
Since Sunday (72hrs ago) my 310xt will not connect with my ANT agent. The ant agent detects the device and requests pairing, which I accept on the device, but the device will not connect and not transfer my run history to the Garmin connect web site.

I have checked the USB is "enabled" and that pairing is "on".
I have deleted all but the latest runs ( although I regularly delete the histories so there were only about 7 items in total on the history data base).
I have not downloaded any upgrades.
I had a look on UTUBE about "rebooting" the device- holding mode & lap buttons down for 7 seconds, and also holding the mode and start button down at the same time.... still no joy :-(

Anyone have any advice?
I bought the device in Jan 2012.
