Privacy Setting to Prevent Bike Theft

It would be very helpful if Garmin Connect could allow us to set up a privacy zone around our home so we can make our rides public and participate in segments.
Without such a feature we cannot make our rides public without making the location of our home public. Then, it is just too easy for people to use Garmin Connect as a go-to place to find out where expensive bikes are. If someone were to find out that their home was broken into because its location is posted for everyone to see, that would seriously hurt Garmin Connect's chances of succeeding.
  • Just change your privacy settings so your data isn't viewable by everyone as a default. It's not as nice as Strava's feature but at least your data is private.

But then you can't be on the segment leader boards.

But then you won't have your bike stolen.

Seriously. If you want to use segments and leaderboards, go to Strava. Your privacy is better protected, their segment and leaderboards systems are much more robust, and the people over there seem have a more competitive take on training.
  • I'm inclined to agree with you Travis - but that is what's so frustrating about this whole Garmin Connect Modern thing - it's trying to be all things to all men rather than taking a step back and trying to design really useful unique features on connect whilst at the same time making the data open so that it can easily be used in other systems like strava etc.
  • Personally I mostly use Strava for shoe/equipment tracking...I sync to both Garmin & Strava. I have zero use for all the segments/KOM stuff...just don't care. If I did I sure wouldn't be banking on Garmin to catch up with Strava...they are years behind with both the concept and data collection.

This I know. Another advantage of Strava is access to Veloviewer for analysis, which is excellent. Garmin's missing an opportunity. If it had software that was easy and good, then it's got first go at the data for most of us.
  • Surely the simple answer is to cycle away then start recording?

Your suggestion does not make sense. I want to record the time I spend on my bike. If I have to ride half a mile before the start of each ride and stop recording afterwards then over the year I will lose a lot of data. Apart from this important aspect there is also human error, I'd be upset if I forgot to start or stop the ride when I was safely away from my home - remember you can't even crop a ride in Connect.

I'm loving Segments on my 1000. None of my rides are visible though and I don't think many others in my area are to because lots of people my me and the other posters in this thread do not want strangers knowing where they live.

I am currently using Strava as my main reviewing tool as it offers this basic feature. I am currently only using Segments as a way of tracking progress over a Segment in real time and due to the empty leaderboards I am only really racing against my PBs.

I think lots of people would make their rides public if this basic feature was implemented.
  • +1 for this privacy zone feature, hopefully implemented similarly to Strava's.
  • My issue is identical to that of BRANDONAMOS. +1 for a privacy feature like that of Strava.

Having to duplicate Strava segments onto Garmin Connect is a PITA, but live segments are a useful aid while riding.

But still keeping my Garmin rides private, due to this issue, so the segments mean nothing in the world of Garmin Connect.

Thankfully, Strava continues to provide what I want.

    +1 for this feature request.

Would also be happy with a simpler version (without the blackout zone around home) that does not show any activity details at all, but still updates the leaderboard with the rank.
