I have been using my Edge 500 on trainer, and now it will not display speed. It does cadence fine but not speed. I have replace battery, repositioned sensor, hit reset, moved magnet. Nothing seems to help! Very frustrated!
Is it safe to assume that you have a Garmin Speed/Cadence sensor (GSC-10)? If so, you should be able to press the little white button on the side of the sensor and spin your rear wheel. You should see a green flash every time that the wheel magnet passes by the sensor and a red light every time the crank magnet passes. If you don't see the appropriate color flash when it should, then adjust the magnet or sensor position until it is working correctly. Once this is working, go back into your Edge 500 settings and ensure that the sensor is configured as a Speed/Cadence sensor, not just a Cadence sensor.
Thanks for the reply, I do have a Garmin GSC-10 sensor, and I have tried the reset button. I can not get the green light to light when the wheel magnet passes. The red light will when the pedal turns. I have moved the magnet several times. I am very frustrated.
Well, that is the problem. Your GSC-10 isn't picking up the magnet as it passes by the sensor. It isn't a problem with Garmin Connect, Garmin Express, or your Edge 500. So that is progress.
Now that we've isolated the problem, you'll have to do more investigation to find a solution. Is the little line around the sensor arm lined up with the center of the magnet as it passes by? You could try a different magnet if you have one laying around (any powerful magnet should be able to do the trick). You might try to pull the battery, leave it out for a minute, and put it back. Maybe try replacing the battery again. Other than that I'm not sure what else to try.
So far, I'm certain that 2, 5, 6, and 8 have actually happened. I'm not certain that you used a fresh battery, and I'm not sure that you've done it twice. You may think I'm being annoying and pedantic here, but I bought two packs of CR2032 cells recently and the first one I tried was dead.
If you can definitively say that it is not the battery. If none of the other suggestions help, the next step is to replace the GSC-10.
I have tried two new batteries. I think you are correct that the GSC-10 is defective. I am a little disappointed, the unit is only 6 months old and I just replaced the hear rate monitor strap. Garmin was nice enough to send me a new one at no charge, I am hoping they will send me another GSC-10. Thanks for your help.
