It's OK to have a garmin edge 800, to plan a route and to follow it, But how do you record your actual performance (step by step and menu by menu), averages, max and min., your track, time and elevations onto your GPS and finally how do you retrieve this information onto your computer. It seems as if you need to buy several programs to do that, Which ones? My Garmin worked originally and now every thing has stopped working due to expired licences etc. etc. Every one wants to make money out of you but none of the programs actually do what you want it to do - I want private computer based software without subscriptions.

  • The little start/stop button on the lower right? Press it whenever you start and press it again when you're done. That will record your track.

The information is stored in a FIT file right on your Edge 800. When you plug it in, it should mount as a disk on your computer. Then you just find your way to the Activities folder (on a Mac, you go to the disk GARMIN, to the folder Garmin, and then to Activities).

As for software, there are tons of web sites. Garmin has Garmin Connect, there's Strava, RunKeeper, RideWithGPS, and more, most of them free for basic use. If you install Garmin Express, then that will automatically sync to your Garmin Connect account once you have one set up. The others are a bit more difficult than that to use, but always remember that your FIT files are on your 800, and usually there's a way to manually upload them to a site.

On my Macs, I use RubiTrack 3 (recommended), Ascent (no longer being developed), and Garmin Training Center (apparently no longer available from Garmin). There's also Golden Cheetah, an Open Source project, that runs everywhere.

I don't know what on your 800 could possibly have stopped working due to "expired licenses". Care to elaborate?
