Garmin Edge 800 intermittant/almost no route navigation

Hi guys

I am having some trouble getting route navigation working on my 800, I am using TCX files from map my ride and have used the settings shown here: http://www.scarletfire.co.uk/foolproof-course-navigation-on-the-garmin-edge-800/

When I select a course, I click on spanner and turn the guidance to on (wish it was on as default!), the I hit the green button to go and the route is calculated. When I start the ride, it asks me if I wish to start the timer, which i do. I then begin to ride, the unit tracks round the course on "map" no problems, but when I am in a screen showing speed and other info, the Guidance rarely cuts in to show me the directions, occasionally it works from the work go, usually it doesnt and then sometimes it will start working randomly at some point well into the ride.

My latest action, I have done a hard reset and gone through all the settings again, all seems to be well, but last nights course, again, no navigation!

This is very frustrating, the main reason I bought a garmin 800, was for navigation to allow me to explore new routes in areas I dont know, so far, its not going very well!

Some help would be appreciated.

thanks

Paul

    No thoughts at all anyone?
  • Clearly you haven't used the search function on this forum, since this is a common problem that many people (including me) using an Edge for navigation have run into. Turn by turn simply isn't reliable. Sometimes it works completely well, but often it's just as you describe. You'll see the same complaints now from people using the Edge 1000, so this isn't something that Garmin has fixed.

To minimize the problem, you should be using Garmin BaseCamp to plot routes, and use the exact same maps on your 800 and BaseCamp. That's what I do, and it helps. Alternatively, people have said there are web sites (search the forums) that put in "cue sheets", which are simply messages that get popped up on your screen. Arrange to have one before every intersection, and they serve the purpose of turn-by-turn instructions. Or you can just use the map on the 800 to follow your course, which is marked on the map, and don't worry about the turn-by-turn.

Well, i did try the search function, but obviously, I didnt find the answer, hence my post. Thanks for the response, seems like what you are saying is, that Garmins are not reliable, which leaves me somewhat annoyed as they reason I shelled out a small fortune to buy the "market leading brand" was to get reliable route guidance.

I was sort of expecting an actual garmin employee to reply though and handle the matter as a technical fault, i guess I will try calling Garmin UK.
  • For the most part, Garmin employees don't read these forums. Dumb but true. There are exceptions, but it's never something you can count on. It's always better to contact them directly.
