Different Clouds for Different Continents?

I have been trying to test Connections and Groups specifically and the ability to use GCM as a messaging medium in general.

The first thing I have noticed is that I am apparently using a different version of Garmin Connect Modern than many of my connections most of whom are in Europe or Australia.

Specifically, when I click on the three bars in the upper left hand corner, I get a 17 item drop down list containing:

Activities
Badges
Calendar
Challenges
Connections
Courses
Devices
Goals
Groups
Personal Records
Reports
Segments
Sleep
Steps
Training Plans
Weight
Workouts

My connections only get 9:

Activities
Badges
Challenges
Connections
Devices
Reports
Sleep
Steps
Weight

What is the deal with that? Makes you wonder what else is different.
  • Is it just that they are connecting from outside the US, or is it something else? Do your connections that have only 9 entries in that slide-out menu have a Garmin Device other than a VivoFit registered on the Devices page? Have you tried connecting via a proxy outside the US or having them connect via a proxy inside the US?

    Hi Travis.

    1. I have a Forerunner 410 and an Edge 705 in addition to the Vivofit but only the Vivofit shows up under devices in GCM.
    2. I have a new Connection in Sweden that has the long list.
    3. One of the things that is missing from the short list is Groups which has nothing to do with the hardware I have.

Great guesses all. I don't know how to do the international proxy thing but if you do it would be fun to see what you find out.
  • Not necessarily related to your original question, but do you have Garmin Express installed? Do the 705 and 410 show up in Garmin Express? If not, have you tried adding them?

Well. Yes and no. I do have Garmin Express installed becaue that is the only way my Vivofit will communicate with the Ant+ stick. I have Ant Agent Installed becaues that is the only way the 410 will communicate with the Ant + stick (they will not run at the same time). The 705 communicates over a usb cable and will upload directly to GC.

GCM only shows the Vivifit and Edge under Devices. Same for Garmin Express. Activities from all three devices show up in Activities in both GCM and GCC.

    What a mess.

Just tried pairing the 410 with Garmin Express for the umpteenth time.

    Got this as usual:

I've been promised 410 support under Express pretty continuously since mid-February. Last guesstimate was "end of May".

Garmin confirmed to me last week that the long list in GC Modern is reserved for users of their more sophisticated fitness devices that can actually use those features. They were more cryptic about why Groups were not included in the short list. Said I would understand why "soon".
