Modern is Clunky and Not Intuitive

The modern version of Garmin Connect is clunky, unresponsive much of the time and not at all intuitive (when compared to the old version). It's terrible.

I've tried several times to get away with the so called ''modern version'' of the Garmin website and I must say it is utter garbage. Not even sure what Garmin are trying to achieve with such a busy complicated screen system.Give me the classic view any day. Simple. Displays exactly what you want in an uncomplicated format. Easy to navigate around. Why try and re- invent a perfectly good wheel. Do Garmin not read the thousands of user posts on this very topic all over the web. Every single one of my friends bar none have the same opinion. I am a member of a cycling club a running club and a tri club also a member of an open water swimming group. So this in not the opinion of one or two folk.... this is on mass. I do not honestly know one single person who likes or indeed uses the so called modern view. Come on Garmin listen please to what you users are saying. we pay premium money for your products. I have XT 310 plus an Edge 800 plus a nuvi for the car so I have spent circa £600 GBP on your products and I am not the only one who is in the same situation. I cannot believe this ''modern version'' software has been tested by end users otherwise is would have been binned at the first hurdle.. Please respond Garmin.
  • I don't know if Garmin will respond here, but there have been users here who have stated they prefer the Modern version. Whatever your views I get the impression Modern is here to stay. Personally I like it :)

Same here by a wide margin.

Many thanks for the replies. I think there will be a day when the old one gets switched off and I simply have to get used to the new one. Maybe I just have to keep trying it and one day, who knows, I may like it too. Till then its the old one for me with maybe the odd dip in and out to keep finding my way around the new system. Oh Boy!!!! life eh. P.S. I also use widows 8 on a non swipe laptop which is mentioned in a previous post. There we have another op system that I suspect wont hang around too long. prob a bit like NT and Vista. lasted about 2 mins ha ha
  • For Garmin, I pretty much started with the Modern, but went back to classic at times. I actually find "modern" pretty good, but there is a learning curve, as things are in a different place, but once you get used to it, it's FAR more flexible, IMHO. For example, is gear tracking, step tracking, or segments in classic?
  • I am quite prepared to accept that for style reasons Garmin want to replace the classic connect. what seems a real shame is that in the process they lose functionality from the earlier version in the same way that they did for the move from Training Centre to Connect. Most of that functionality should be very simple to carry over. I guess some of the change is a reflection of the fitness devices moving to a wider less specialist audience but it is a shame to lose functions that are valuable to some of that audience for the sake of a relatively low expenditure. Although having said that Garmin have obviously bitten off more than they can chewing modernising the interface and released a product that was not fully tested. It would have been sensible to carry out a beta test release to a group of volunteer users and iron out the major shortcomings before going global. I realise that they didn't give everyone modern at the same time but they did thrust it upon people rather than using a group of willing participants. I can only hioe that they have learnt from the experience and future changes will be less painful.

I went from Training Center to Modern without a stop in Classic. I've had to use Classic when certain features of Modern were broken but I am not familiar enough with Classic to know what features might be missing. Which features were you referring to? I'm curious.

I'm with the people who don't like modern. One of my chief complaints is that if I'm viewing an activity, I see a wide but short map and all the ride data like elevation, speed, heart rate, and cadence is stacked below the map. One widescreen monitors, there's no way to view the data and the map at the same time. If they rendered the map less full-width and made the data available to the side, it would be more useful. I realize that if the data doesn't have room to spread out horizontally, it gets very compressed. Another thing I'd like is to see the map in full-screen to really be able to examine the details of the route w/o having to zoom as much...then maybe have selected data superimposed on the map as overlays.

Anyway, I like the classic view better, just my 02¢.
  • With all due respect to the person responsible for "Modern" being the default, I hope you lose your job.

To the person or team who created the "Modern" view, you have no clue about usability and aesthetics.

Sorry for being snarky, but it is AN unnecessary hassle to have to Switch to Classic Temporarily.

I just switched back from my failed Wahoo Fitness experiment.

Loving my new Garmin Forerunner 920XT.

    Hating Modern view.

C'mon guys, at least give us the option to choose either permanently.

For me a perfect solution would be a square map with the details beside it, on the right. This would display well on a (common) 16:9 screen.

Modern gives me a wide, short map. My loops are kind of round, so much of the wide map area is wasted. Also the details are under the map and cannot be seen while looking at the map.

I can only assume that this was developed for a runner taking East-West routes who has no interest in seeing the details of the their run while looking at the map.
