This is hilariously bad.

This is just amazingly bad, guys.

I had just finished up a post complaining about how buggy Garmin's software has been lately, and complaining about the vast numbers of "updates", all of which seem to create as many problems as they solve, and after I hit post, I got a "Site under maintenance" page! (I just checked, and no, last night's outage was not announced in the forum dedicated to "planned maintenance")

http://static.garmincdn.com/maintenance.html

What a fitting metaphor to describe the extremely poor standards that Garmin seems to be plagued with as of late!

Garmin really needs to get their act together; I can't be the only one who finds their performance lately to be unacceptable. Especially now that that there are so many new fitness trackers entering the marketplace, Garmin is facing more competition than ever, and it seems that instead of stepping up their game, they're falling to pieces. At this rate, this part of their business is going to crash and burn. Hopefully they don't take the entire company's reputation down with them!
  • I think the problem was the site went down due to the vast numbers trying to update CN NA 2015.10, which has just been released. The site was down for about 30 minutes, hardly a biggie in comparison to crashes on other websites at times.

As someone with a fair amount of experience running large websites, if that's true, that does not reflect well on the operations team.

Why on earth would you couple your forum's functionality with a software update? That's what CDNs are for. A half-hour unplanned outage due to a predictable, planned event is definitely a "biggie", and if it's being laughed off by the company as no big deal, that's completely indicative of the lack of concern for quality that I was talking about in my original post.

If anybody at the company would like some professional advice on how to run a modern website and ops department, I'm available on a contract basis, and I'd love to help.

I do like Garmin's products; this nonsense lately does not reflect well on the company, and will damage public perception in ways which are very difficult to fix.
