Garmin Connect says my browser is out of date, but it is not!

Garmin Connect says my browser is out of date.

Time to update. We will soon be phasing out support for your browser. For the best viewing experience please consider updating to one of the more modern browsers listed.

When I click on the provided internet explorer link, I am taken to a web page which tells me

Thanks!

You're using Internet Explorer 9, the latest browser for Windows Vista.

It appears to me that my browser is not out of date, so why do I keep getting this message?
  • I am using Safari and I just had the same "banner" style message come up on the top of the new "modern" Garmin Connect page. Maybe someone from Garmin could chime in and give us some insight.
  • Note: I'm not a Garmin employee, I'm just taking a reasonable stab at trying to decypher the message that you're getting...

The first page indicated that your browser, Internet Explorer 9, is out of date. IE9 is more than three years old today. Version 10 has been available to Windows 7 users since Feb 2013, and 11 has been available to Windows 8 users since Oct 2013. Given the pace of technology in this area, IE9 is pretty old, and the warning message is accurate.

The second page indicated that Internet Explorer 9 is the latest version of Internet Explorer available on Windows Vista. Again, this message is accurate. That is the most recent version of Internet Explorer available for Windows Vista. This says nothing about browsers other than Internet Explorer.

If I had to guess, Garmin is probably phasing out support for IE9. Since Microsoft doesn't offer IE10 or 11 on Vista, your options are..

    • Upgrade (or replace) your computer so that you can run Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 or Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.
    • Change your browser. Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox should all be available for Windows Vista.
    • Stop using Garmin Connect.
    • Keep your current browser until it stops working entirely, then revisit options one of the above options.

Honestly, the simplest thing to do is option 2. If you are resistant to change, then do option 4 followed by option 2. While I understand some hesitation to installing 3rdparty software, there are many nice features that come with these browsers (specifically Chrome/Firefox) that make it worth the trouble.

  • I have this same problem with Chrome and Safari on Mac, neither browser is out of date, but still I can't access Garmin Connect from either of them. I've emptied the cache as well as removed the ad-blocker, but to no help. Any suggestions on what might be interfering with GC?
  • I use Safari 8.0.5 on Yosemite (10.10.3) and it works just fine with Garmin Connect. What does it say when you try to connect?
  • IT shows up with IE 11 also

I am running IE 11 and I get the same message..so there is a problem
