New Garmin Connect website: How to upload an external course?

This was pretty straightforward with the old website but I can't seem to find a way to do this on the new site.
  • Click the icon that looks like three white bars on the left edge of the screen. Click Activities, then click the Import link near the top-right corner.

When I click 'Import' as you have described above, I am only given the option to manually upload a file. Yes, I am definitely clicking 'Import', and not 'Manual Activity'. Crazy, isn't it.

Yet when I go back to the classic website immediately afterwards, I am able to upload from my Edge 800 which is connected to my computer without any problems whatsoever.
  • Not really crazy at all when you think about what "import" and "manual activity" should mean.

Even on the old Garmin Connect, there is "manual activity" and "manual upload" of which "manual activity" still means the same on both new and old GC. "manual upload" on the old GC equates to "import" on the new which makes perfect sense, knowing what those terms mean.

you can get back to the old website - which I think is better - by logging on in the new system then pointing the browser to: http://connect.garmin.com/dashboard from there all the old stuff is available, like upload and that sort of thing - no idea how long this will stay but I hope for ever!

It still only gives you the option to upload it as an activity, not a course. I have several courses I've created on http://ridewithgps.com that I can not upload to my Garmin 910xt. They have better maps and give the option to build in turn notifications (unlike the "plan" feature of Garmin Connect). I have tried them as .gpx, .tcx, etc. I have also tried using the old ant agent with the old training center. This worked once but no longer does - plus it is a pain as you have to uninstall express, etc. Surely there is a way to do this! If anyone knows how please share.

Hard to see how the new interface is indeed an advance when you can't even do simply what is the most common task ie to upload data from the GPS. Having a button called "Upload" as in the previous unimproved interface seems like an eminently simple solution to me. Why was it not included in the new? This is a major flaw that annoys me intensely every time ... so I switch back to the old setup!!
  • The reason you don't have an upload button on the new interface is because it's not needed. Activities automatically get sent to it without any intervention on your part whenever you connect your device to your computer via usb or ant stick. However, you do have to install Garmin Express before this can happen. Of course your device does have to supported by Garmin Express. AFAIK, all the fitness devices are now compatible with GE. If you use another category of Garmin's devices, then many of them are supported by GE too, but there are plenty that are not.

The new site works and functions pretty much like the old site for me with the exception of the method to get activities up to it.

That being said, I'm not so happy with perceptions I'm getting about how Garmin views their relationship with me, them and their devices I own, but that's an entirely different subject than this thread topic.
