Running out of memory space and poor operation.

Hi,

I have the problem that when downloading new map updates I barely have enough room left now to load the UK on to the Zumo 550 device whereas one of my riding companions who has not done so many downloads can not only get all of the UK but also northern France, Belgium and the Netherlands. On "My Computer" the Zumo drive is showing red with only 102 MB free from the 1.94 GB Zumo memory and this with just the UK mapping installed.

Garmin support say that they do not design their products to be future proof and that with ever more information being added it is likely that I will eventually run out of space and that I should use an SD card to install more maps plus delete all unnecessary files such as vehicles and voices which I have already done and which makes little or no difference. I already use an SD card loading all mapping to the computer then using MapInstal to load maps to the device and card as required. This still doesn't explain though why I have so little space left on my Zumo whereas my travelling companion who has the same maps as me has loads.

I fully suspect that with each download Garmin Express is not formatting/removing the older map versions in their entirety before loading the updated versions and consequently clogging up the memory space. I have three disc image files which take up most of the space, far bigger than my companions. These are:

gmapprom 1,636,576 KB; gmapsupp 266,496 KB and gmapbmap 5,807 KB

Does anyone have any idea how I can reduce these files as I believe deletion or formatting them could render my device useless.

Also is the fact that the device drive is showing "in the red" on "My Computer" prohibiting the mapping calculation function as riding in parts of France and Belgium a few weeks back was a nightmare.

Many thanks.

Pete.
