Calorie count stopped working on Edge 500 & Battery always shows 100%

A few days ago my calorie count stopped working. I can't think of anything I may have changed but the count shows zero, always. I use it for health issues so it's important to me to get it working again. I have since reset the device back to the factory specs and reloaded my settings and history with no luck. I ride for 30 miles and it still shows zero calories. I can't think of anything I may have done to turn it off and a reset obviously did nothing either.

It must be some setting, anyone have a clue where to begin? I did attempt to change my weight last week before this began but as I recall, I backed out of that without changing anything. Someone here I bet knows what I did to make it stop working - I hope its some simple setting I inadvertently turned off.

I have a secondary issue too that probably doesn't have anything to do with the above but who knows. It's my battery display. It always shows 100% no matter how long its been operating. I do recall one time shortly after I bought it that I saw 94% and since then, its always 100%. That's obviously not correct when I go for a 5 hour ride and come back to a 100% full battery? Not possible.

Thanks in advance

  • There have been other posts about the Calorie count not working on the 500 and other edges over the last few months. I've never seen any one post back that a solution was found. Might need to get with Garmin Support and see if they can get it working again. They'll likely have you do a bunch of preliminary stuff that may or may not work, but with persistence on your part, I'm sure they will eventually get it working again.

When you do get a solution, please post it back here to help others.

I've had no issue with my edge 500, but have not updated since version 3.0, nor do I use Garmin Express or the new Garmin Connect.
  • I have exactly the same issue as Raleighwood01, and I did the same thing regarding changing my weight goal. My 500 had worked fine for months and quit showing the calories in the last month. It has to be a simple fix. How do we get someone from tech support to help?

You go to the garmin support site and get their phone number for your region or open a support ticket online. Support is free whether in warranty or not.
  • I'd like to chime in on this one as I'm seeing the same behavior in my last couple of rides.

My Edge has worked flawless for well over a year. In other threads, I saw that a hard reset seemed to clear up the issue. Though sometimes it would revert. I'm going to give that a try when I get home.

But this indicates it might be a settings problem. Further, the _only_ action I've taken with my Edge that is out of the ordinary in the last few days is that I sync'd my edge with Garmin Connect's settings.

So, I'm going to try a hard reset and see if that works. If it does, sync to Connect see if it breaks. If it does, hard reset again. Maybe others could try that as well?

I am having the exact same problem. Calorie calcuation has been working for several years with no issue then I recently used Garmin Connect to update my Edge 500 settings and it seems to have upset the calorie settings somehow. Did the reset fix your problem?

    hi guys,

Just an idea - I know that with my Edge800 that I can set my 'Activity Class' under my user profile - check that your 'Activity Class' hasn't accidentally been reset (maybe through a firmware update or hard reset) to 0 (zero). Page 43 & 53 of the owners manual has all the details.

    cheers

Hey thanks for posting Mike. I was just about to do a factory reset and dreading having to spend hours reconfiguring my Edge 500. Last ditch attempt I went in and changed my Activity Class. It hadn't reset to zero, but I changed it anyway. Problem fixed! And it was a simple 2 second config change.

    Thanks again!

Same for me. A few days ago, I changed my Heart Rate Intervals using Garmin Connect and my EDGE 500 stopped to record calories. No idea until I found this thread.I went to User Profile and Activity Class was changed mysteriously. I corrected it to normal value and now everything is working fine. Some glitch with Connect, I think. But no need to backup and/or hard reset. My 2 cents. Firmware version is 3.3.

    Cheers!

Oh gosh. I just spent an hour with the hard reset to get calorie back. Anyone know anything about the battery always saying 100%? I have that problme too. Always buggy Garmin software...

Nearly a year after this thread was started, I found it while trying to figure out why I recorded zero calories on a two hour ride yesterday. Same issue - 'Activity Class' had been changed to 10. Slight LOL there. Anyway, changed it back and all good again. A shame Garmin don't fix stuff like this, and the permanent 100% battery.
