difference in elevation data between device and after sync

When I sync my 810 to upload data, the elevation data, ascent, descent is different and a lot lower then the numbers that my device display after a ride. this just happened since the new software. for example: a route displaying around 1300ft elevation on my device will only display 580ft after syncing. Why is this? Why does the new sync program shows so much difference with the device numbers? How can i correct this problem? This never happened with the old program where you upload the files.
  • I'm just guessing but might it be that the website is showing the values taken from the elevations in the map database. Possibly there wasn't a value in the upload file, or Garmin Connect is still screwed up on this like it has been since February or so.
  • Just because your device has a barometric altimeter (or calculates elevation based on an elevation map) does not mean that the elevation data it provides is accurate. Chances are fairly good that the elevation you are seeing on Garmin Connect is with elevation correction applied using your position data to estimate elevation. That functionality might be producing incorrect results (due to a bug with Garmin Connect), or it could be right and your device is generating bad elevation data (air pressure can have a significant effect on the data provided by a barometric altimeter). Theoretically, the data calculated by Garmin Connect would be the one you would trust, but as pointed out above, this functionality has been really sketchy for the last few months.

  • I've been having exactly this problem with my 810. The discrepancy is huge (eg 3000' gain showing on the device, 2000' when I download to Connect) and I've noticed it over the 20-odd rides since I've started using the 810.

If the difference was the odd 100' or so I would discount this as a small issue, but such a massive error makes me think Garmin haven't got their act together.

You think that was huge, my elevation gain on a 7k run with my Garmin 220 last week was 70,186 feet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
