Joining a route partway through on Garmin 62s

Hi All,
Can you tell a 62s that you want to join a route part of the way through, rather than at either end? We were trying last night and it seemed determined to make us start from an end point, rather than the nearest waypoint. I'd rather not edit routes in the field if I can avoid it as it's a lot of faff. Any helpful advice is welcome!
