How to upload activities in the new modern view?

I like the look of the new "Modern view" Garmin Connect, but trying to work out how to do what I have done in the old version!

I'm struggling to find a button to upload my activities. I can see an area for my devices and it seems that using Garmin Express, I can identify the devices, but it seems that when I do that, everything will just sync automatically. Sounds good, but it's not what I want. I share an Edge bike computer with my wife, so we only want to upload our own activities. Not a problem previously as we could select "Upload selected activities", but it now just wants to sync everything. I'm sure the facility must be there somewhere to upload only selected activities from the device - please can someone point me in the right direction.
  • If you are using Garmin Express for you uploads, the browser doesn't matter. Assuming you've configured Garmin Express correctly, the uploads should happen automatically when you connect your device. The browser is not used except to later go and view your activity data on Garmin Connect.
  • But if you are NOT using Garmin Express, the import process is far less robust than the Classic upload functionality. If you have a 610 then you're SOL as that watch isn't recognized as a mass storage device. So beyond being less functional, it flat out doesn't work at all for that. As long as Classic is still accessible, I'm able to detect all my different devices and upload 'all new' or 'selected' activities. That just isn't possible under Modern the way it sits today.

Yes, if you relied on the Garmin Communicator Plugin to do manual uploads, then the process is less robust.

    No on two levels.

First off, the FR610 uses ANT+ to communicate with your computer. No Garmin ANT+ device appears as mass storage like a USB device would, nor have they ever. ANT-FS is just too slow to work well for real-time file browsing.

Second, I personally own a FR610 (and a 910XT) and have been using both devices with Garmin Express since April. I plug in the ANT+ USB stick, wake the computer and my uploads start within a minute or so. This isn't really any different than I experienced with the old ANT Agent software. In other words, to get activity data off of a FR610 you shouldn't have ever needed to use the manual upload button.

Yup. with Garmin Express and the modern Garmin Connect, it should detect all of your devices, and automatically upload all activities without you clicking a single button.
  • Is it possible somehow to IMPORT multiple .gpx files. There seems to be option to do it one at the time only.
Garmin may be pleased to know that I have just migrated from another platform however, I have now about 100 .gpx files that I would like in Connect.
I would like to be able to import them in one hit rather then spend a day and individually handle one at the time.
Or is it a feature 'wish-list' item ?
  • I'm afraid Garmin doesn't provide a system to do this directly. You may be able to use a bit of 3rdparty software to transfer data from one service to another (Tapiriik or CopyMySports).

Agreed that WITH Garmin Express, the automatic upload process works as designed. My observation is that WITHOUT Garmin Express, the manual upload process is less functional and Modern doesn't detect my 610 (with the ant agent) at all. I don't have Garmin Express installed at home. I don't have Garmin Express installed on every computer at work. My comment was that if Garmin Express isn't available, you MUST use the classic view to manually upload activities (assuming also that the ant agent is installed - which it is for me on all my access points. That just isn't true for with in regards to GE. So agreed that ant enable devices communicate just fine with Garmin Express. That doesn't get me anywhere when Garmin Express isn't installed.
  • I have to semi-correct myself here. While it's still true that the Modern import is less robust than the Classic upload, it's not 'impossible' to import from the 610 (or other ant enabled device) as I first thought. Once I got my head out of my ass I realized that the ant agent is still syncing the activity file to my laptop as usual and that I'm able to navigate to that location and import to Connect via Modern. I still have to be physically present at the location where I synced in order to retrieve that file but the same could be said about Classic. If I sync at home, then I couldn't manually upload at work using Classic even though I'm able to detect my 610. The file wouldn't be on the device anymore in that case. I was stuck in the box of testing too many devices and trying to retrieve activities from the new mass storage device mentality and not being able to see my 610. Modern still can't see it (without GE) but it can definitely find the file once I have it on my drive (via ant). Thanks Travis!
  • I figured out the manual upload on the activities page, but so far Express or Connect has not automatically uploaded any activity. I downloaded express and my machine recognizes that Garmin is attached, but I either have to go to activities page and 'import' which is laborious or revert to classic and upload. I have not figured out any other system to get new activities from my watch to my computer. I do not share either device, so that is not an issue for me, but it still just doesn't work and I was hoping for something with fewer steps than going to activities and importing.
  • Yes, this is precisely the behaviour I am having. I didn't even know Garmin had switched to a new Connect until I went to my saved link and a blank blue page loaded. Took a little while to figure out that AdBlock Plus was preventing the new site from loading. Once THAT hurdle was crossed, I'm left with having to switch to Classic Connect to upload from my Forerunner 210. In the Modern view it keeps saying that I have to add my device with Garmin Express, but I have already installed that (several times). Express sees my device, but activities are never uploaded. So now instead of a one-click process, I have to navigate to a file and manually upload the activity? This is Garmin's idea of "Modern"?

What IS it about Garmin that it does this to its customers over and over again?

-Zero communication of completely new software and UI.
    -Zero documentation of operation instructions.
-Zero testing for issues with commonly installed products like ad blockers (why is a site coded in a way that it is recognized as hostile advertising?).
-Zero customer support and long, tedious rollouts of software that never really quite works.

Why do they constantly take working products and break them?

This is my third Garmin device. Forerunner 305 (old, no battery life), 405CX (absolute junk with that bezel) and finally bought a 210 for its simplicity. Have also used aviation and auto units and those have been ok. But the software and support has ALWAYS sucked and for fitness devices, with this latest amateur hour display even the most patient customer like myself is finally done and looking at alternatives. Maybe Suunto or Polar or whomever isn't any better, but surely they can't be much worse.
  • I guess you never registered with Garmin or if you did didn't update your e mail address as e mails were sent giving details about the switch over.

There is a help page here http://connect.garmin.com/en-US/help/how-to/

Check with AdBlocker ... it's hardly fair to blame Garmin as to why AdBlocker blocks it. There are often false positives with AV programs etc with programs developed by numerous companies.
