"You have no device on Garmin Connect"

Opening up the new Garmin Connect website, and plugging in my device, I receive the message:

"You have no device on Garmin Connect"

That's funny, I had one yesterday, and I have had one pretty much every day for the last 2 or 3 years. Regardless, I begrudgingly follow the prompt to a download of "Garmin Express" which I download, and install, then launch, only to be met with another message:

"Unsupported device detected. A different version of this application needs to be installed to update this device."

That's funny; it was supported yesterday, and has been supported for the last 2 or 3 years. With my frustration increasing, I follow yet another prompt, another "install." Curiously, this time it's for the "Garmin Map Updater", which I install, fully expecting yet another error message. Ah, I don't have to wait very long: a new window opens up, the "Garmin Map Update" window, and my eye is drawn instantly to the yellow triangle with the exclamation in the center. Yet another error message:

"A Garmin GPS was detected, but it does not support the updating of its built-in maps."

At this point I wonder, more or less out load: "Then why did you insist that I install a map updater?"

Anyway, the error message continues:

"If you have a different Garmin GPS to update, ensure that it is connected to the computer and turned on, then click find device.

Well, the device is of course turned on, and it is of course connected to the computer - that's how this whole mess started in the first place. The problem is, well, there's nowhere to click that says "find device" - there is only a drop-down menu, which is dead and/or blank, and there is a "continue" button. I click on this and my Garmin session is apparently over: another yellow triangle with the exclamation mark, and my 5th or is it 6th error message of the session:

"Garmin Map Update quit unexpectedly".

Well, I guess one really doesn't always get what one pays for, since I paid for a Garmin device that would record my data - and, heck, Garmin won't even recognize the device I paid for, never mind record all my precious data!

My personal experience - as soon as I saw that I needed to install a new device driver in order to upload activities, coupled with the fact that I've yet to find a way to manually upload a .fit file, I decided that this 'upgrade' is a no-go for the moment.

I've experienced unreliability with the legacy uploading script so now I only manually upload files. If the way forward is that we must rely on Garmin software to manage the uploading of activities, well then for me it's goodbye Garmin Connect and hello Strava.

edit: If there is actually a way to manually upload .fit files then I'm happy to try it out. Hmm...maybe it's time to spin up a virtual machine and see what damage the new software will do...
