I have been using the Linux plugin from Andreas Diesner. Looks like this won't work with the new way of doing things. When can we expect a Linux version of Garmin Express?
Never. Anyway, I'd rather they just keep the manual upload function working than have to add another unnecessary program to my workflow.
The way Express works seems to be that you plug in the GPS and it uploads all of your track data directly to Connect. Having this as the only method removes way too much flexibility from the process. What if I need to split or combine or otherwise edit the data before I upload it? What if I don't want to clutter my account with every single track file stored on the device. I don't care how many calories I burned driving to the grocery store if I happened to have my GPS running in the car. What if I want to copy the data to my laptop somewhere without internet access and upload it later? (i.e. uploading at some point in time when the device is not necessarily directly attached, or if I've copied the data to another machine first) What if I want to upload a track I recorded with my phone?
The problem with not using Express is getting the GPS satellite cache data on devices that support it. Is there any way to do that outside of Express? If not, you suffer much longer satellite acquisition times.
I've been curious for a while about something like Garmin Express for Linux purely as a way of updating the firmware on my Forerunner 220. Does anybody know if there's anything or any info out there on how to accomplish this?
I find that most everything else I can do in other ways.
